She admitted to taking $84K but was only required to pay back $12K??? -------------------- Former Wendell Finance Director Convicted Of Embezzlement - The former finance director for the Town of Wendell has admitted to stealing $84,000 from the town. Barbara Raper, who is 70, had worked at Wendell’s town hall for 30 years. She was arrested in September and last week pled guilty in court to embezzlement charges. Raper received a suspended sentence and agreed to repay $12,224. A 2005 audit found more than $275,000 had been misappropriated since 2000. After the audit last November, Raper was placed on administrative leave and shortly thereafter, resigned. Investigators said they could only prove Raper stole about $84,000. The Town of Wendell has filed a civil complaint seeking to recover the remaining $190,000. Officials have never determined why the 70-year-old woman took the money. Raper apparently wasn’t living a lavish lifestyle with the money.
