I found a kitten about 3 months ago, she uses the litter box but still poops on the floor too. We tried keeping the litter box clean and that helps some but she still uses the floor too. We figured out that now she only does it when we are not around. Since we rubbed her face in it when she did it in front of us...any suggestions? My mom says it has to stop or I have to get rid of her....please help!

I've been trying to break my cat of this too.

Some of my ideas have been:

New/different litter box (maybe the old one smells - that she can smell, but you cant, or has 'bad memories' for her.)

Different brand or type of cat litter.

    Litterbox in a different location.

Just don't send kitty outside to live... Your neighbors will thank you. :x

Rubbing her nose in it will NOT help. The kitten doesn't understand what you are doing. The previous suggestions should help, really, really clean the litter box and put a different brand of litter in it but I wouldn't drastically change the location either, she is looking for it where you have it now, you have to change it gradually by moving it a little at a time if you want to move it at all.

Does she go 'near' her litter box? My cat started doing it when I put the litter box on a carpeted floor. When it was on a linoleum floor, she never missed the litter box ... I think she just didnt like going on the cold linoleum, but doesnt mind going on carpet, cuz she can scratch around on it afterwards. If it's on carpet, can you put some sort of plastic matting around it, so she doesnt have anywhere comfortable to 'scratch' like a cat would in grass, or gravel?

no she poops in a completly different room. it's no where near her litter box. And she has 2 litter boxes to choose from, which have 2 different kinds of litter in them. Because I have 2 other cats also.

Maybe she is suffering from litter box confusion.

Maybe she likes her privacy and the other cats are not giving her any.

They say.. and I am suggesting this loosely because I don't subscribe to this theory and I don't have any problems ... I have 7 indoor/outdoor cats(only 2 are strictly inside, 4 come and go as they please, and 1 is 99% outdoors), and 3 litter boxes that are emptied just about every other day.

You should have a little box for each cat, maybe she doesn't like to share with your other 2 cats. Maybe she's intimidated by them or their scents in those litterboxes?

Just my thought for the day :)

Does she poop in the same spot every time?

If so, even if it is in different spots every time, clean it up then put her food there on a paper plate or something, and if it is in various places in the house put down a couple plates of food for her.

I don't know if this will work or not but they suggest it for puppies that are learning to be house trained, may work for cats.

    Just a suggestion,

I've never ever had a problem with litter training cats, hmmm

My suggestion would be to try a covered litter box. Believe it or not, some kitties do like their privacy.

I think the problem has a simple answer.

There are SOME cats that WILL NOT share a litter box with another cat. There are also some that will pee in a mutual box but not poop and vice-versa...To be honest...I can't say that I blame them...also the brand of litter can be a factor.

My suggestion: Get a new litterbox and place litter you know the cat has used in the past inside of it. Put it and the cat in a room (confined) for three days...make certain you scoop this litter daily and that you spend some time with the kitty so it doesn't feel like it is being punished. It would help if the box was in a location where it could stay once the 3 days are up. The kitty will take this box as it's own and moving it might cause confusion.

BTW- sticking a cat or dogs nose in their business teaches them nothing - other than the fact that you did something really nasty to them. They don't reason it in their heads...then again..neither do humans...when was the last time you heard of moms rubbing dirty diapers in their childrens faces in order to potty train them

Hey boots, I had that trouble with my most recently aquired kitten. I watched him like a hawk for a few days and every time he even thought about pooping or peeing, I dumped him in the litter box. Eventually, he got the idea that was where he was supposed to go. When I wasn't home, I kept him in a confined area (no carpet) with his food, water and the littler box.

    good luck, sug'
