She was 10 yards away, she could see the car, it was December not July and it was only a couple of minutes. Maybe a warning, but handcuffs and a trial? No.

Not even a warning. It'd be different if it was 90 outside with the windows rolled up and the car shut off. Sleeting outside, cold, only for a minute, car in sight, doors locked, alarm on... Who wouldn't do what she did? :banghead:

How many of you wanted to lynch that woman last year who stopped for a minute at a mini-mart and had her car stolen with the baby in the backseat?

All of us, that idiot left her keys in the car and the doors unlocked - and was the car in sight? Did she go into the mini mart?

This particular woman took every precaution. Big diff.

Don't remember, I wasn't involved in that conversation. But would have to consider the circumstances even there. Very sad though, and it's different to me if she went inside the store and left the doors unlocked. Very different.

Only because nothing happened. But if the car had slipped into gear, or some other catastrophy had taken place, y'all would be breaking out the torches and pitchforks.

How would it slip into gear if she took all precautions? If she had hazards, locks, I would assume she had an emergency brake also - at least I would. How would the infant get out of her seat and pop it into gear? Do gears pop out on their own fairly often?

nope because I have done something similiar, locking the doors while I put up the cart if it was raining or forget something in the house and run in and run out. Accidents happen, stupidity is just that!

Yes, and it's everyday that a carjacker will steal a car from in front of a mini-mart.

Stupidity is leaving your child in the car while you step away "for just a minute"

It's not stupid if it is locked up, out of gear, and has an emergency brake, AND you are in sight of it.

The car would not have been stolen had it not been for the unlocked doors and keys in the ignition, Clif.

first off, carjacking and car theft are a little different you have to be in your car to be carjacked. Second the woman last year left her car unlocked and running at like 11 or 12 o'clock at night, that is beyond stupid. In this case the woman had locked the doors, in front of a very public place and was within 10 feet of her car, no different than going to a gas station and getting gas and walking to the trash can while you fill your car up..

'Scuse me, but I have never even taken part in any of those discussions and would NOT be among the bearers of torches and/or pitchforks. Leave me outta that one! :)

I don't think she did much wrong - I wasn't the brightest thing, but given the circumstances it was ok. The child was safe and warm. The cop was mean not to give her a warning.

:iagree: The cop was probably so busy taking care of this that she didn't even see the drug deal going on at the corner.. You know what I mean - this lady is not a 'criminal' and should not have been treated this way, a warning yes, but not arrested in front of her children! Lets worry about the real criminals.

Does anyone here leave their kids in the car? What age do you think is the right age to do so? Now, I'm talking like if your going to just run in a get milk or ciggs, or what ever..not long term shopping.

We've had this very discussion on here way back when. And ever since Ken enlighten me... (thanks Ken) I have changed how I leave my kids in the car.

I have 2 sets of keys... I use to leave my truck running and lock the doors with the other key. But all anyone had to do was break the glass and take off. Now if I have to pump gas, go in to pay, etc. I turn the truck off & lock up. If I have to go in for more than say a minute... the kids come with me.

I do have my kids trained though... if anyone takes them they go into Baby Jac Jac mode and flip the hell out. They'll be brought back to me.

I'm not saying I have never, ever done it, but I haven't left him in the car as a rule, I am paranoid. I can think of one time I ran in to get pizza I had ordered for carryout, locked the car with him in it.................... and locked myself out. Duh!! We keep a spare door key in one of those magnetic things attached to car, so after a moment of panic I was able to get back in the car. Lesson learned.

My SIL had put her kids in their carseats (in the car) in her garage, along with the dog, she forgot her purse and ran back in the house to get it. The DOG locked the car doors and she couldn't get in. Her DH had to come home with his spare keys(he was only 5 minutes away, and I'm sure she would have broken out a window if necessary, as would I). I try to learn from other's mistakes!

Long story short, I am more afraid of my own stupidity, than I am of someone actually stealing him. Like Koo said, they'd bring him right back!

I dont know this day in time they would have to be older and know how to get in and out of the car quickly. but personally if they are that big they can walk in with me..
