Besides the programs at the Ice House, does anyone know of anyone who gives lessons to kids?

No, but my daughters did them at the Ice House in Garner a couple years ago. They learned a great deal and there were adults in the classes as well.

The ice house in Garner also offers private lessons. I think they range from $44 - $72 depending on the teacher. For example the $72/hr is for a olympic silver medalist.

Because hockey season is starting in a few weeks and he is about 6.5 miles behind the curve.

I can second Jacqui at the ice house. She taught my 4yr old (mice on ice) and she is great!

I think that there are about 3-4 sessions dedicated to skating before they recommend hockey. I doubt he'll be able to contribute much to a hockey team with only a few weeks of lessons. Good luck though.

Come on it's hockey.....how hard is it to beat someone with a stick while claiming you are going after a puck?

Not like these kids are trying out for the Cane's (at leats not yet).

Besides watching some of the kids during intermission at the RBC.....you wonder if they know how to skate.

You would be surprised. Even at the 11-12 age group, the kids were pretty darned skilled, especially in skating. They all knew what they were doing.

I think if my son could pick up some speed and get going backwards a little better, then he would do ok.

Sent several emails to Jacqui...no response yet.

How old is your son? My 7 year old that was born and raised in JoCo area just finished his first year of mites with the RYHA. He went to a Canes game at the age of 5 and dedcided hockey was his sport. We signed him up for the Learn to skate programs (he completed Basic 1-3) at the Garner Ice House and the Hockey 1 class at the Cary Ice House. Then made the leap of faith and signed him up with the RYHA. If he can already skate then you can try to sign him up for the Cary program (the drills they run are pretty much basic stick and puck handling skills with a emphasis on basic skating). Cary also has a power skating class on Mondays from 4:45-5:45 pm for $10 that targets skating skills. You can also try to talk to one of the coaches of the East Coast Eagles and see if anyone trains individuals or has a camp scheduled. You can go to any of the rinks in Garner, Cary, Wake Forest, or the Ice Plex or The Rec Zone and pick up numerous flyers of scheduled camps in the area (you can also research this on line). However if he can not skate forwards and backwards or stop, he needs to go through the learn to skate programs until he can. I wish him the best of luck and hif he decides to stick with it be prepared to spend the $$$$$$$.

Thanks for the info. I did finally manage to get a girl at the Garner Ice House to work with him starting Saturday. Its basically going to work, time wise, like the learn to skate but since its 1 on 1 teaching, i think he will learn more, faster...and thats what he needs.
