Hey guys and gals. I've got a 3 day weekend planned week after next for my hubby's big 3-0. We're taking a trip down to Kill Devil Hills for the weekend and this will be the first trip to the OBX for either of us (I know, sad, esp. considering that I'm a NC native!!). I've got our hotel booked, "fun car" rented in case it's warm enough to cruise with the top down and we're planning a day at Jockey's Ridge, Wright Brothers Memorial and hubby is thinking about doing the hang-gliding where you get pulled up a mile in the sky by a cessna and hang glide tandem with an expert. Hubs is a pilot so all this is his idea of a kick arse weekend...me, I'll be safely on the ground taking pics:lol: And of course we're planning to check out as many lighthouses as possible. My question is what are ya'lls thoughts on food?? I'm thinking Kill Devil Grill, Awful Arthur's, possibly OBX brewing company. Anyone know of THE place to eat down there? Nothing fancy and it can't be all seafood...hubs has this dumb rule, "If it swims, I don't eat it" :banghead: So he's gotta have chicken, steak, or burgers, etc. Don't need a huge bar scene, in fact, we're the type that is at the restaurant at 5pm usually, unless they have an early bird special for 4:30 then we're early birds:lol: THoughts, ideas?? Have I forgotten anything?? I know there are experts here and thanks in advance for your ideas!!
can't go wrong with Dirty Dicks Crab House or Gumbay's Grille and Raw Bar....and for something a bit fancier Kelly's is outstanding. Have fun!
Not really close...but Howard's Pub in Ocrakoke has the coldest beer in NC. Nothing better than surf fishing all day in late Oct and then spending the evening in Howard's. http://www.howardspub.com/ordereze/default.aspx
Agree with KellBell about Dirty ****'s. Their slogan alone got my attention: "I got my crabs from Dirty ****'s." LOL
Magnolia Grill on Manteo. Definitely worth the drive or stopping by on your way in or out of OBX. Breakfast omelette with fresh seafood and hollandiase is to die for..
Had forgotten all about Dirty D's! Never heard of Goombays but the website looks fun and they have a great drink menu! Pulled up Kelly's menu:drool: I've got to stop looking at these while I'm starving!!! Even at 3 oclock in the afternoon a breakfast omelette sounds divine:lol: Thanks for all the ideas! I will be checking them out...
Have you ever been to Biscuits and Porn? hahahaha....even if you don't eat there (which by the way, they have an excellent short order grill) you have to get a T-shirt. It's inside a Citgo Gas Station (I think it's citgo, but you can google it) and it's been there for-evva too.
Dirty ****'s Dirty ****'s Steamed Spiced Shrimp is worth the drive alone. I eat it every time I go to the OBX. I've never been let down - always great!
breakfast We usually have breakfast at Eat and Get the **** Out and there is a donut place (they have like 3 or 4 stores) with fabulous donuts. Duck Donuts-that's it. http://duckdonuts.com/ http://www.thecoastalexplorer.com/BobsGrillOBX/?scid=44&intAdID=917 Have a good time!
TORTUGA'S LIE! MP 11 on the Beach Road. Hole in the wall & small, so many times there is a wait, very casual, but SUCH GOOD food! I know your husband doesn't eat seafood (my husband doesn't either he gets the burgers & the jerk chicken most of the time), but if you like seafood, they have THE BEST steamed spice shrimp EVER. Good prices too. We've been going to Nags Head for 2 weeks in the summer for over 10 years & probably eat there at least 5-7 times during our stay each year. KELLY'S is pricer, but GREAT food there too. We always go there once or twice during our stay. They have great bands on Friday & Saturday nights also. The dining area is very nice & totally separate from the bar/band area. If you go to dinner, you can stay for the band & not pay the cover charge. LUCKY 12 TAVERN we just discovered 2 years ago(they may have been pretty new then) and we really enjoyed them too. Great pizza, great crab cakes (LOVE the sauce that comes w/them) great sandwiches. Casual atmosphere there as well & decent prices. Goombays is good also, been there a few times. Have a great time!! -K
I came across Tortuga's in my internet searching and it has RAVE reviews so I'm glad to hear someone here agrees! Geez, I only have 2 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 2 dinners to try to fit all these great sounding places into one weekend...we may just have to nibble across all of them over the course of 3 days to get a little bite of everything:lol: I LOOOOOVEEEE seafood and plan to be stuffed full of shrimp, crab, salmon, flounder and whatever else I can find!! Thanks for all the help everyone
My personal favorite was always The Black Pelican. My advice? Pull up Tripadvisor's and see the reviews for the local restaurants. Then, its worth a shot to see if any are listed at restaurant.com. Just a suggestion!
Tortuga's is my favorite for dinner...Sam and Omies (16.5 MP) for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They made a GREAT she-crab soup. That is much further down the road, but a nice drive down to see the other end.
Oh I forgot... For breakfast we always go to SHIP'S WHEEL. Love, love, love thier pancakes! So yummy. They serve pretty good portions for a pretty good price too. I think they are about MP 9 1/2 on the beach road. -K
