THE SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD!!! If you are 30 or older you will think this is hilarious!!!! When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what, with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning .... uphill BOTH ways yadda, yadda, yadda! And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it! But now that... I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it! I mean, whe n I wa s a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!! There was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter...with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there! There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself! Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances mister! We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'asteroids' and the graphics sucked! Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE! When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or some old broad with a hat sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just screwed! Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15 channels and there was no onscreen menu and no remote control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to fi nd out< BR>what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your rear and walk over to the TV to change the channel and there was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little snots! And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove or go build a frigging fire .... imagine that! If we wanted popcorn, we had to use that stupid Jiffy Pop thing and shake it over the stove forever like an idiot. That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled!!!!!!!!! You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980! Oh yea, and a seatbelt was Mom throwing her arm across your chest every time she hit the brakes. Regards, The over 30 Crowd
You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980! Oh yea, and a seatbelt was Mom throwing her arm across your chest every time she hit the brakes. TRUE, So TURE. My Mom still does this --- the LEFT foot on the brake & the RIGHT ARM whacks out to hold you back from the dash/windshield.
OMG that ****ed me off when ever the DJ did that! I was like... GREAT BOB... you messed a perfectly good mix tape!! You Moron.
I keep telling my kids!! They just don't know. Just think when they get older, I wonder if they will have these tales.
This was so funny and I read it out loud to my 70ish mother but I didn't even realize that she would not understand most of the lingo and stuff we do now. It really grates on her nerves when my daughter and I are on our computers. She does not understand what the internet is nor does she understand a computer. What a hoot! Grace:lol:
One more law that my parents believe should be left to the individual. Seat Belts! Nice to know your mom does the same and my mom does the same with the stupid feet...drives me nuts. Grace
...and that was if YOU were the one watching. If OUR parents were watching the TV, WE WERE the stinking remote... Thanks chik - that was priceless!!!
I remember that and HBO used to show short documentaries that actually had value, typically those that used to win Oscars.
I remember standing up in the middle of the front seat, as my mom drove, leaning my back against the back of the front seat. All car windows had to be rolled up using the crank/lever, and the only way to lock and unlock a door was with your fingers or a key.
No mention of cell phones? I remember that on the occasions something happened to interrupt our phone service, we had to hop in the car & go find a pay phone so we could report a phone outage to the phone company. Back in the day it seemed like EVERYTHING was long distance. If I was in town & needed to call home - I would have to find a payphone. Oh yeah - I also don't remember McDonalds having the play areas when I was growing up. We had to actually sit at the table with the grown ups & eat - Not that we actually went to McDonalds that often. I also don't think McDonalds started with the Happy Meal's until 1979 or 1980. All I ever got was a napkin & a pack of ketchup with my take out McDonalds meals When I learned to drive my 1st car - I had to learn to drive a stick. I don't know much about cars - but it's been a long time since I've been in a car like that. Satellite TV dishes sure got a lot smaller too. My Dad still swears his old dish has to have some kind of value. He never threw the thing away. No kidding - he recently said he was thinking about trying to turn it into a goldfish pond. I remember typing term papers on a typewriter - no spell check & lots of white out. I also don't remember my local bank having an ATM until I was in high school. Seatbelts??? I remember this one car my Dad had that only had a driver's seat. We had tires sitting on the floor that the rest of us sat on. The other family cars where a 3-wheel street motorcycle with this box seat my parents built on the back & a two door pickup. On the bike, my parents sat on the regular tank seat & my two sisters & I sat in the box seat. I’m not sure I knew what seat belts where. The other vehicle was a pickup truck. We all squeezed in the front when it was raining - but usually us kids rode in the back. Did they even make 4 door or extended cab trucks in the 70’s? Video camera’s were huge. We didn’t have one, but my neighbor had a film projector to play home movies. Digital cameras were another step in the right direction. Another thing I love is automatic car light – that shut off automatically. I can remember the days of religiously carrying jumper cables because I left my car lights on more often than I care to admit. Ice makers may have been around for a long time – but when I was growing up we used ice trays. I remember popping popcorn in a pan. Then we got really fancy & bought a popcorn popper. These days I just toss a bag in the microwave. I got my 1st set of contacts in the 7th grade. I remember when I had to use distilled water & some machine to clean them for an hour nightly. Then use enzamatic cleaner on the weekends. Now contacts are sooo easy – you can wear them for a while – even when sleeping & swimming & then toss them. Even better – now you can just have lasik surgery. Calculators? You couldn’t buy them at the dollar store. I actually used to balance my checkbook with no calculator or computer. Yuck. Especially since I wrote lots of checks. Bank cards are wonderful!
Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15 channels and there was no onscreen menu and no remote control! heck i am old enough to remember when there were only three local stations -- they came on at 5a.m. with the national anthem and went off at mid-night or shortly thereafter so you could watch a test pattern if you couldn't sleep not to mention party lines (for you younger folks that means sharing a phone line with the house down the road) and remember only having to use four digits to call someone i remember when all gas was pumped by someone else -- that's one i wish that would come back -- few places if any had central air -- the schools certainly did not tang was the breakfast of the astronauts
I grew up in SC. There were a few kids in class who didn't bathe quite as often as they should. On a nice hot day, I swear you could smell them across the room. Central Air would have been a wonderful thing back then. I also remember when every kid in the school was at recess at the same time - rather than the way they split recess & playground to keep the older kids separate from the younger ones now. The toys on the playground were a lot more fun now. I think lots of them aren't allowed anymore due to safety reasons - but they sure were fun back in the day.
