I thought I'd start a thread about gardening in general and have a place to put various links, ideas, tips, etc in one thread. If you have a gardening question, surely a member of the 4042 family will have an answer for you. We'll see how it does. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - My 1st link is a cool way to root tomato suckers and have a good source for some late tomatoes after your initial planting. I'm definitely going to do this! I love this guy's youtube videos!!! Rooting Tomato Suckers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gxRKRGslYs
If I have a hummingbird feeder near my tomatoes, will the hummers peck at them because they're red? (This may be a stupid question, but it's a new world to me!)
Best advice for keeping squirrels away from tomatoes? I have tried: Rat traps Fake owl Fake snake Sprinkler Only thing I have found to work definitively is a high powered pellet gun. Thins the herd a bit. Most aggravating thing is they take a tomato, drag it out of the garden and eat half of it and get spooked. Then they come back for a new tomato instead of finishing off the first one.
Tips on dealing with tomato blight:http://www.kitchenstewardship.com/2...ening-series-how-to-get-rid-of-tomato-blight/ We just sprayed our garden bed with the bleach solution yesterday. We've been looking for a specific blight resistant tomato variety called 'Legend' but haven't been able to find them yet, went to Farmers Market yesterday but didn't have any luck there either.
DW uses a cayenne or habenero pepper spray mix that she makes herself Ingredients include Pepper, Garlic, dish soap and water. Safe and non toxic for your veggies, keeps the critters away, and some bugs. a little makes a lot!!!! She also says Squirrels and Deer don't care for strong smells like Rosemary, Lavender, Marigold, Nasturtium, Lillies.
I have a bird feeder next to a huge rosemary bush. Squirrels all over that thing. I am beginning to think I have some sort of mutant squirrels in my yard.
A dog. Sounds like my kids and sodas. They'll grab a soda, drink half then, if they get interrupted, they'll open a new can rather than finish off the already opened one.
Moles... what's a girl to do??? Anyone have any idea how to deter these pests from my lawn and gardens? TIA!
Try adding a bird bath near the tomatoes and keep fresh water available. I think the squirrels are going after the tomatoes for the moisture. I've got 2 bird baths near my garden and I have at least a dozen or more active squirrels in my yard. I have never noticed them in my garden or noticed any squirrel-related damage to my tomatoes or any other veggie. I could be wrong, and even if it doesn't solve the problem, you'll be providing a service.
And how's the rest of your family? I can remember when I was little and I used to say "sorry" my dad would always say..."and how's the rest of your family". I always found it funny. Sherry
I will go ahead and give some advice too: Snails Best this I have seen to keep snail out is coffee grounds. It helps sweeten the soil, but the snails can't handle the caffeine.
I have TONS of used coffee grounds if anyone needs them! Several gallon-sized ziplock bags full. Saved them for a year or two but then never used them. Hated to throw them out, so they've been sitting on a storage shelf.
