My son wants a new Ipad. We've got an original one that won't run a lot of new apps because it can't handle a new OS. I looked online and found all kinds. Next generation, air, pro, and such. Prices seem to range all over on amazon. I want a new one, not refurbished. Wi-fi only. Which ones handle the new OS and won't have restrictions on new apps?

I bought my two iPad Air refurbished from the Apple Store. Can guarantee you from the packaging to the iPad itself, you cannot tell the difference from a new one. The only restrictions that any of them have on apps is if you have enough storage available to install them. The app developer is the one responsible for updating their apps to work on the current IOS version, not Apple. I would suggest a minimum of 32GB. I know my 1st generation air will run IOS 11 because I've already downloaded the developer version.

If you insist buying new you can basically buy the newest version from anywhere you want because the price is going to be the same. Apple controls the pricing very closely. I buy a lot of stuff off the internet to save on the tax, especially on high end items.

I got the Air about 4 years ago at Walmart on Black Friday with a $100 walmart gift card. I think I paid $200 or $300 for it.
Last year they had the Ipad Air Mini 2 32GB for $199

Thanks for the help. I figured it out with your help. Mine don't have the hardware for new OS / apps. I was just startled when the first one I saw was the Ipad pro for $800!

Will also have problems with new apps when IOS 11 is released this month because the IPad 4, IPhone 5 and 5c won't be able to download IOS 11. That leaves the iPad Air as the oldest IPad that will run the new software and if Apple stays pretty much true to form IOS 12 will come out a year from now probably meaning the new operating system will require at least an IPad Air 2

If I get a "new" plain Ipad, not a pro or mini, will I have what I'm looking for? The pro is around $800 vs $329 for a "new" ipad.

You should be good to go with that version. The only thing I would do is check and make sure 32GB would be enough for him. Unfortunately there are no ways to increase the storage on these things other than putting a lot of items in the cloud and personally I'm not a big fan of that. Cost for 128MB is $100 more but well worth it if needed.
