Efforts Continue in Schools SMITHFIELD-- Johnston County Schools students and staff are continuing to send money and goods to the stricken Gulf Coast states. Glendale-Kenly Elementary and North Johnston High School are collecting toothpaste, toothbrushes, pillows and socks to take to There is Hope Ministries, a local church that will be transporting the goods to the American Red Cross tomorrow. At Corinth-Holders, a Mardis Gras-themed relief effort will begin next week called "Coins and Cans for Katrina." A bulletin board has been erected and a Social Studies lesson on geography will be taught to share information about the Gulf Coast states. Students are also completing writing exercises sharing what they've learned about New Orleans and hurricanes. At Clayton Middle School, the Beta Club begins its monetary collection effort tomorrow on behalf of the American Red Cross, while a class of students is bringing in supplies and creating baskets. Staff members from West Clayton Elementary collected $1400 in one hour on Friday, Sept. 2 and presented to Radio Station 105.1 at Lowes' Food Center. The West Clayton Elementary PTA will sponsor "Dollar Days" beginning September 12. They have set a goal of $1000 to be given to the American Red Cross to assist in relief efforts. Students and staff are encouraged to give $1.00 to help meet this goal. We will be collecting school supplies to be given to displaced students. Our collection will run through Sept. 30th. Students are asked to bring notebooks, paper, binders, pens and pencils. We are also planning to collect $1.00/student for those who wish to give. Our AVID students are looking to do a car wash to raise funds. Selma Elementary School will be collecting flood buckets and/or items during the month of September. The items will be delivered to Edgerton United Methodist Church, which will deliver these buckets to the affected areas.
