    African-American Dance Ensemble to Perform at SSS
    The African American Dance Ensemble from Durham will be performing in the Smithfield-Selma High School auditorium on Monday, March 15, 2004 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. The ensemble will be presenting their program as a part of the Johnston County Arts Council 2003-2004 Artists-in-the-Schools program. It is a 45-minute visual extravaganza of dance, music and song provides an introduction to the dance, music and cultural history of the nations of Africa. The lecture demonstration is a unique educational experience engaging the audience in a lively session of learning about the celebration of life as practiced in the diverse cultures of modern Africa.

    Muffins for Mom at Corinth-Holders
    On Wednesday, March 17th from 8:00 to 8:45 a.m. Corinth Holders will host Muffins with Mom. Students in Pre-K through 2nd grade may bring their mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, or other female guardian to have breakfast and read.

    South Smithfield to Host SSS Acting Class in Performing Frumpled Fairy Tales
    The community is invited to see Frumpled Fairy Tales, a short play that modernizes and "frumples" the Grimm fairy tales of Rumplestiltskin, Rapunzel, and Red Riding Hood, performed by the advanced acting class from Smithfield-Selma High School on March 16. The show, under the direction of Ruth Mills, begins at 6:30 p.m. The program is sponsored by the South Smithfield Elementary School Parent Involvement committee.

    Also at South Smithfield, Jan Black from Selma Parks and Recreation will read a St. Patrick's story to all kindergarten classes at 1 p.m. in the school's multi-purpose room to teach about the customs of St. Patrick's Day and to show how fun reading can be.

    McGee's Middle School Hosting Family Arts Literacy Night
    Children's author Ann Fairington will give three secrets to becoming a better writer and artist at the school's "Family and Arts Literacy Night" on Thursday, March 25 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Johnston County Schools Parent Involvement Specialist Sarah Thompson will give students and parents tips for coping with the stress of schoolwork and the upcoming EOGs. In addition, a book fair will begin at 6 p.m., and the Student Government will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser. Students will also share information about their art and book projects. Every child who attends the event will receive a Passport, homework pass.

    South Campus Community School Hosting Book Fair
    South Campus Community School will host a Scholastic book fair on April 1, 2, 5, and 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to help raise funds for the school library and for instructional materials. The Fair will feature specially priced books and educational products, including newly released works, award-winning titles, children's classics, interactive software and current bestsellers from more than 150 publishers. The event will kick off with a special family event with door prizes on April 1.

    West Smithfield Elementary Hosting Math Night
    Teachers at West Smithfield Elementary School will present fun math games on Thursday, March 18 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to show students and their families how much fun math can be. The games will be played throughout the school.

    WJHS Senior Appointed To Naval Academy
    Kyle Durant, a Senior at West Johnston High School, has been appointed to the United States Naval Academy. Durant was one of more than 14,000 applicants, of which only 10 percent were accepted.

    Clayton High School Yearbook Recognized for Excellence
    The Clayton High School yearbook staff has been recognized by Taylor Publishing Company with an Award of Excellence honoring its accomplishments in yearbook design and coverage. The yearbook is featured in the 2004 Yearbook Yearbook. The school yearbook advisor is Merv Sessoms. "The Award of Excellence is given each year to a small percentage of yearbook staffs nationwide that demonstrate excellence in yearbook creation," said Mike Taylor, marketing manager at Taylor Publishing. We applaud these staffs for their outstanding work and support their efforts in scholastic journalism." Taylor's Yearbook Yearbook is used for design ideas, and the schools featured in it are some of the trend-setters in the industry.

    North Johnston Students Engage in Service Project
    As part of its continued effort to promote good character, the eighth grade at North Johnston Middle School has begun a service project called "March Madness: You CAN Make a Difference" to demonstrate the character trait, compassion. Assisting the Kenly Area Ministries with its Food Bank, the students are bringing paper products and non-perishable foods to stock the Food Bank shelves. They will gather canned goods, dry foods, cereal, snack foods, diapers, toilet tissue, paper towels, and household toiletries. The project began March 8 and will continue through Friday, March 26.

    Riverwood Elementary Students Taking Field Trip, School Hosting Spring Fling
    The second grade at Riverwood Elementary School, will take a field trip around the Clayton community on March 22, 23, and 24 as part of the social studies curriculum. One of the stops will be the Clayton News-Star newspaper.
    The Riverwood Elementary School PTA will host a fundraiser on Saturday, March 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the school.

    River Dell Students to Light Up Stage
    Kindergarten through second grade students will give on-stage performances during a program entitled, "Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice," on Thursday, March 11 at 9:30 a.m., and an evening performance at 7 p.m. Both performances will be held at the school in the cafetorium. The program is a culmination of the music lessons and will provide the students the opportunity to perform on stage.

    Cooper Elementary School Science Fair Scheduled
    Students will participate in the school Science Fair March 30 through April 2. The projects will promote science and creativity.
    The school will also host a Parent Reception and Fairy Tale Ball on April 16 at 8:30 a.m. in the Cooper gym.
    In addition, the school's Parent Night and Book Fair will be held on April 22 at 6:30 p.m.

    Polenta Elementary Making ID Cards for Students, Hosting Science Fair
    Ident-a-Kid will be at Polenta Elementary to make photo identification cards for students on March 16 at 8:30 a.m. The cards will include the child's name, fingerprint, date of birth, height, weight, hair and eye color.

    West Johnston Hosting Freshman, Sophomore, Junior Parent Nights
    Freshman and Sophomore Parent Night is scheduled for March 16 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Parents whose students are enrolled in AP courses are invited to a meeting from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Junior Night is March 23 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. From 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., there will be a meeting for parents whose students are enrolled or who would like to enroll in AP courses. From 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., an Admissions Counselor from NC State will discuss competitive enrollment at universities. From 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., counselors will discuss a timeline for Seniors before entering their Senior year.

    Cleveland Elementary Sets Date for Annual Spring Carnival
    Cleveland Elementary Schools' annual Spring Carnival will be held on Saturday, March 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. featuring large blown-up rides, an Easter Egg hunt, pictures with the Easter bunny, food, and games. Profits will be donated to the teachers who run the events.
