    National School Nurse Day is May 5
    Johnston County Schools will observe National School Nurse Day on Wednesday, May 5. Educators recognize the link between health and the academic success of students. School nurses support the success of students by assisting them to attend school, remain in class and ready to learn.

    Governor's School Students Chosen
    Four Johnston County Schools students have been chosen to attend the 2004 session of the Governor's School. The students and their areas of study include: Alicia K. Allen, South Johnston High, mathematics, Governor's School East; Amanda M. Quinn, Smithfield-Selma High School, mathematics, Governor's School East; Andrea L. Stephenson, West Johnston High, art, Governor's School West; Kenneth F. Rooks, South Johnston High, mathematics, Governor's School West.

    South Johnston NJROTC Earns Distinguished Unit Award
    South Johnston High School's Air Force Junior ROTC Unit NC-073 has earned the Distinguished Unit Award for academic year 2003-2004. The award recognizes the personal growth and accomplishments of the cadets, as well as the support of the community. The Distinguished Unit Award is limited to the top 20 percent of our nation's 744 Air Force Junior ROTC units.

    Spread a Blanket Day May 7 at Cooper Elementary School, Car Wash on May 8
    First and second grade students at Cooper Elementary School will bring towels or blankets to school on Friday, May 7 for an hour of outside reading and listening to stories. Parents are invited to participate and read to their children.

    Also at Cooper, the Cooper Elementary School Parent Advisory Council will sponsor a car wash from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to raise money for the Cooper Scholarship Fund at the Clayton Wal-Mart.

    Scholarship Awards Ceremony Slated for May 19
    West Johnston High School will host its first Scholarship Awards ceremony for seniors on May 19 at 7 p.m. in the school's auditorium.

    Smithfield-Selma High School Band Reaps Awards in Florida
    The Smithfield-Selma High School returned from Florida with a second place rating for Band in Parade and a Superior rating, the highest possible. The band also won third place in the Jazz Band festival. Josh Duncan won the Most Outstanding Soloist in the Jazz Festival. Fifteen bands from across the country participated. Eight students made the All District Band this year, and four qualified to audition for the All State Band. One student, Robert Goodwin, made the All State Band. He is the first student in five years to make it from Smithfield- Selma High School.
