The band program at Smithfield-Selma High School has reached a new era in music appreciation. For many years, the SSS Spartans have had award-winning bands that competed in traditional venues like parades, concerts and field show competitions. However, the Atlantic Indoor Association (AIA) has created a new winter forum for the high school performing arts. There are two categories that have opened a brand new era in band student participation called the Indoor Percussion Ensemble and Winter Color Guard both performed in the non-traditional venue of a gym. The first competition of the season was held at West Johnston High School on

Saturday, February 9, 2008. The line-up consisted of bands from all over North Carolina and Virginia, but it was the local bands and color guards that took top honors.
The Smithfield-Selma Spartan Indoor Percussion Ensemble was the last to perform in their category, but finished in first place at West’s Winter Fest. The 2007-08 SSS Indoor Percussion performance was entitled Motown Metal and highlighted many Motown songs from the 60’s and 70’s with a twist. The Spartans dressed for the part in mechanic jumpsuits and car jockey attire. In addition to performing the spectacular music arrangement with traditional percussion instruments like xylophones, bells, snares, bass drums and the like, the Spartans also creatively performed on non-traditional instruments including 50-gallon oil drums and used car parts.
Last year during the 2006-07 school year, the SSS Indoor Percussion Ensemble competed in the Atlantic Indoor Association’s forum for the first time and finished as the top North Carolina band. The SSS Winter Color Guard had a graceful performance to a heart-warming song called "One Moment More." They won first place in the novice category by 10 points.
The SSS Indoor Percussion Ensemble and Winter Color Guard will perform on February 23rd at Green Hope HS (Guard only); on March 1st at Clayton HS; on March 8th in Spartanburg, SC; on March 15th at Wakefield HS, and AIA Championships will be held on April 5th in Virginia. North Johnston Middle School has made some improvements to the athletic department. Once you enter the gym you should now be looking for Jaggy the Jaguar. There is a new school mascot appearing at every home Basketball game. Jaggy also attends the pep rallies to get the students hyped for upcoming games. The Jaguar mascot was chosen upon having try-outs after-school one afternoon. The Jaguar is an eighth grade student currently attending NJMS. This will continue to be the process for the upcoming years when we choose the mascot to represent the school. Along with the mascot there is a new scorer’s table located in the gymnasium. The scorer’s table has the school logo on it with the school colors present as well. These two new additions have added a stronger since of school spirit. Everyone now knows this is the home of the Jaguars when they enter NJMS gym.

North Johnston Middle School held a fundraiser basketball game on Thursday, February 7. The money collected was shared between purchasing care packages for the military and NJMS Athletics. The game brought in a total of

$363.80. The items purchased for the military are going to a young man named Michael Heim. Michael has agreed to share the items with other soldiers on his base. It was brought to the school’s attention that many soldiers in remote locations are not able to purchase items that they may need. So, NJMS joined with a local WISH group in helping provide items for this particular Air Force Base. There is plenty of opportunity for others to get involved and make a difference in a soldier’s life. You may adopt a soldier through the website
www.soldiersangels.com

. The soldiers are very appreciative for any items they may receive. It is amazing how the small things make a big difference in a person’s life. Michael has already responded through email including how excited he is about receiving items from NJMS and how touched he is that NJMS hosted a fundraiser for the soldiers on his base. The items they requested include razor refills, razors, towels, sugar free gum, twizzlers, granola bars, batteries, and small bags of chips. NJMS has purchased most of those items and the items are on the way to the Air Force Base.
