    Wilson's Mills Celebrating Students
    PLEASE NOTE CHANGE IN DATE: Wilson's Mills will host "Kindergarten, Here We Come!" a workshop on Pre-K to Kindergarten transition on Thursday, February 10 from
    6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the school. English and Spanish sessions will be available. Hot dog dinners will be provided from 6 p.m. from 6:30 p.m., with sessions for parents and children beginning at 6:45 p.m.
    On Monday, January 24th, the school will host Achieve, Student of the Month, and Character Counts Awards Assembly (K - 2 at 8:45, 3-5 at 9:45 a.m.)
    **Date Change: Also at Wilson's Mills, the fourth Grade Family Breakfast has been rescheduled to Thursday, January 27 from 7:45 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. in the fourth grade hallway. All fourth grade families are invited to come enjoy muffins, pastries, coffee, and juice while they visit with their child and our staff. On Friday, January 28 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., the school will host a Good Grades Celebration. All third and fourth grade Principal's List/Honor Roll Students will have special celebration (play time) in gym as reward for their accomplishments. On Friday, February 4 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., fifth grade will participate in a Good Grades Celebration.

    Transition to Kindergarten Workshop Presentation Traveling to Other Schools
    The "Kindergarten, Here We Come!" workshop will also be presented at Cooper Elementary School on Tuesday, February 8, South Smithfield Elementary on Thursday February 17, and at Meadow School on Thursday Feb. 24. Dinner will be provided at each of the sites.

    Johnson Elected to Dropout Prevention Board
    Dr. Oliver Johnson, Director of Student Services, was recently elected to the Board of the North Carolina Dropout Prevention Association. The mission of the Association is to promote understanding, encourage and improve communication, and become more knowledgeable in the field of dropout prevention.

    McGee's Crossroads Elementary Celebrating Excellence
    McGee's Crossroads Elementary School will celebrate the recognition of being an Honor School of Excellence on January 28, 2005 at
    9 a.m. when the entire student body, staff and community will unveil our banner in front of the building. Special recognition of the McGee's Elementary staff and student body will take place. Also that day, McGee's will host Elected Official Day, sponsored by the McGee's Elementary PTA, from 9 a.m. to noon. Congressman Bob Etheridge, School Board members Dorothy Johnson, Donna White will visit. County Commissioners have also been invited. McGee's Elementary's Student Council will escort our guests on a tour around the building, learning about our PTA-sponsored character education program that recognizes students who demonstrate acts of greatness and kindness. They will also share how students are recognized for outstanding accomplishments in reaching reading goals and much more.

    Smithfield-Selma Senior High to Present Bye, Bye Birdie
    Rehearsals for the musical Bye, Bye Birdie are underway at Smithfield-Selma Senior High School (SSS). Through next week, the rehearsals will be held in the chorus room, #1503 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, immediately after school. The rehearsals will move to the auditorium beginning in February.

    All-County Band and Clinic February 3, 4
    The annual All-County Band and Clinic will be held on Thursday, February 3 and Friday, February 4 at West Johnston High School. A concert will be held on Friday, February 4 at 7 p.m. The event showcases Johnston County's bands, to include a sixth and seventh Concert Band, eighth grade Symphonic Band, and high school Honors Band. Students must audition to be selected for these bands.

    River Dell Jump Rope Team to Perform
    The River Dell Wranglers Jump Rope team will be performing at various schools within the county. Each performance will consist of heart health and jump rope skills/ routines. The team consists of 27 members who are in fourth and fifth grades. To become a team member, students were given the opportunity to try out in the fall. A jump rope routine was created to music and those interested in trying out had to demonstrate the routine with proficiency and rhythm. Each member has demonstrated most of the 21 basic jumps and has created individual/group jump rope routines which will be shown in each performance.

    Open Houses at South, West Johnston high schools
    South Johnston High School will host its Winter Open house on Monday, January 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Staff will be available. At 6 p.m., an informational session on financial aid will be presented from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. From 6:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., information on Senior projects and related items will be provided. From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., an interpretation of the PSAT and New SAT will be presented.
    At West Johnston, Open House will take place at the school from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Staff will be available for questions.

    McGee's Middle Students Win at Career Conference
    Ten McGee's Middle School students participated in the Career Exploration Clubs of America Region 6 Leadership Conference on January 8 at Harnett Central Middle School. Three first place trophies were awarded to the students, and one team placed third. The conference teaches leadership and other important career-related skills, and allows students to practice those skills they've learned.

    Writer-in-Residence at Meadow
    Tony Peacock, writer, storyteller, teacher, and National Hollerin' Champion will be at Meadow School from January 26 through 30. His classes and performances have been called "an amazing story of connecting and bonding."

    Cleveland Elementary to Host Talent Show
    The Cleveland Elementary School Annual Talent Show and Reflections Awards program will be held on Tuesday, February 8 at 6:30 p.m. during its PTA meeting in the cafeteria. The Reflections program, which features art, literature, music, and photography, will recognize students who participated.

    Johnston Students Continue Compassionate Aid
    Benson Elementary School students participated in a "Change for the Children" coin drive to raise money for victims of the recent tsunami. The money is being donated to the "Save the Children" program.

    At Cleveland Elementary School, second-grade students observed the 100th day of school by collecting $100 to send to the American Red Cross on behalf of the tsunami victims, to raise awareness that the disaster is a world disaster, not just Asia's*and to teach compassion.

    Ronald McDonald to Appear at Cleveland Elementary
    McDonald's Ronald McDonald will visit Cleveland Elementary School on Tuesday, February 15 for two shows on good character at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.*one for kindergartners and first graders, another for second and third graders. The evening has also been deemed McDonald's Night at Cleveland Elementary.

    Tanner Named Vice Chair to District Title I Organization
    Elizabeth Tanner, No Child Left Behind/Pre-K Coordinator for the Johnston County Schools, has been elected Vice-Chairman of the Title I Directors of District 1 organization. She assumed her duties this month.
