    Selma Middle AVID StudentsVisitFayettevilleStateUniversity(New)
The Selma Middle AVID students’ toured
FayettevilleStateUniversity recently. They took a tour of the campus and got a sense of college life. For many of the students this was the first time on a college campus. FSU arranged for a panel of students to share their experiences at FSU and to speak about what it takes to be a successful college student and student leader. The FSU student panel took the AVID students to lunch at CiCi's Pizza and continued the conversation about college life. AVID, Advancement via Individual Determination, is a program which encourages students to participate in the most rigorous course work in middle and high school to ready themselves for enrollment in a four year college program. AVID students are typically first time college-goers in their families. Field trips like the one to FSU help AVID students see themselves being able to go to and being successful in the college setting.

They also discussed the college prep curriculum and the differences between regular, honors and AP classes. They talked about what a GPA is, how it is determined, and why it is important. The eighth grade AVID students were allowed to ask many questions about how they could best plan for the transition to high school, how AVID will serve them in high school, and to find out a little about what to expect socially and academically in high school.
