Propaganda Posters at Riverwood Middle School (New) (photo)
Students recently just learned about World War I in Lamar Waller’s Social Studies
classroom. The students learned about a wide range of topics concerning the war ranging from trench warfare, results and consequences of the war, weapons used in the war, and countries that fought in the war. The students also learned about propaganda posters. The students learned about how propaganda posters were used to instill nationalism into citizens and how the posters were used to encourage men to fight for their respective countries. The students were then given the task of making a propaganda poster for any country—Allied or Central Power—that fought in World War I. The guidelines for the posters were to have a catchy slogan, include a picture representing the slogan, and produce the posters in color. An outside panel of judges looked at the propaganda posters and the top three propaganda posters were chosen to represent the class. The students with the best propaganda posters were: Ashlyn Allen, Kit Sullivan, Emily Cobb, Mads Erikson, and Dal Uzzle.

Cleveland Middle School 8th Grade Career Fair (New)
On Friday February 16, more than 225 eighth graders participated in the school’s seventh annual “Career Fair.” The students had the opportunity to choose six of the 18 career presenters as they rotated through the various classrooms. Presenters from businesses such as NC State Engineering, JCCTruckingSchool, and IBM provided audio-visual demonstrations of their careers. Other presenters like 50-210 EMSgave small tokens from their company. Annual favorites included a policeman and a fire fighter, a crime scene investigator and the U. S. Army ROTC commander from West Johnston High School. Students were encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. Refreshments were provided to our presenters courtesy of Big Steve’s Bagels. A special thank you goes to our PTA, Tiffany Mundy, and Jennifer Holland for all of their hard work and support. The Career Fair is part of the annual 8th grade Career Exploration Project. This project is an inter-disciplinary study of possible future careers. Language Arts students research their personal career choice using books and the computer lab. Math finds students working a budget process for their chosen career. Science is represented as students meet their high school counselors. In Social Studies they use the www.f4k.org website to explore information for their educational path in high school.

Students, parents, and faculty from Benson, North Johnston, and Selma Middle Schools were present at this fun-filled showing of Lion’s Gate Entertainment’s 2006 release Akeelah and the Bee. The GEAR UP attendees filled the theater for the film, prompting GEAR UP organizers and the Howell Theater to make arrangements for several more events in the future. “It is wonderful to see all of the parents showing interest in what their students are a part of in school. We are so happy to get such great support,” said Rose Pittman, GEAR UP Coordinator at NJMS and BMS. All students received three free tickets and concessions for this event. This is just the start of some fun-filled opportunities for these students and their families, and one of many partnerships that we hope to create within our community. “Right now, we are working diligently to increase awareness in our community, as well as create partnerships with local business and organizations,” says Megan Shaner, GEAR UP coordinator at Selma Middle School. “We feel that our partnerships with businesses like The Howell Theater strengthen both our program’s ability to reach out as well as give the business an opportunity to serve its community.” The GEAR UP program coordinators say that they hope to establish more business connections in the future.
