Cooper's Molly Powell Honored JCS Volunteer of the Year Named SMITHFIELD-- Molly Powell, dubbed the "stay-at-school" mother at Cooper Elementary School, was named the county's Volunteer of the Year at the annual PTA/PTO/Parent Advisory banquet Monday night. The event recognizes youth and adult volunteers from every school. Powell averages five hours each week at the school and is currently spearheading a project that will preserve the school's history. She is also a room mom for two teachers (she has two children at Cooper), served as the coordinator of the school's PTA Volunteer program, the Snow Ball event, coordinates the school's Chick-Fil-A nights, the annual sleepover event at the school, and initiates duty-free lunch days. She also coordinates the Kindergarten breakfast each year for parents of new kindergarten students and serves as a proctor during EOG testing. In short, "she is the type of parents teachers can depend on for anything," notes the Volunteer of the Year nomination form to which the entire staff contributed. The nomination further states: "Molly is a kind, warm and giving person. It's hard for Molly to say no when to comes to helping teachers and students. She always wears a big smile and she could be seen daily walking around the school performing all kinds of tasks*Ms. Powell's work as a volunteer at the school has had a significant impact on the school's overall success." The district also recognized Amy R. Johnson of Four Oaks Elementary; Laura B. Langdon of McGee's Crossroads Middle; and, Jamie Tate of River Dell Elementary as first, second, and third runner-up, respectively.
