We can't help but notice that there is a Jehovah's witnesses building being constructed around the corner from our street on Cornwallis Road. It has been loud construction noises for the past few days...including today, the 4th of July. No rest for the weary, I suppose. Do these people go door-to-door with briefcases, with "watchtower" pamphlets here? Do we need to go out and purchase "no soliciting" signs to keep them off our property? We are a bit disconcerted about this new addition to what we consider a peaceful, quiet neighborhood...

  2. You are assuming the worst. It's not like a strip club is going to be built there. It could be a lot worse. If they come to your door, do what I do, don't answer it!

I agree, it is just like any other proselytizing group, would you chase the Baptists off ? I found that telling them you are a Unitarian doesn't work, just makes them ask more questions. Always been told the best way to get rid of them is to tell them you are Catholic, they will figure you are a lost cause.

A strip club sounds interesting... :p

A friend suggested greeting them at the door in our birthday suits. Less violent than a gun, and way more amusing!

I just politely tell them that I'm a Christian and I do not want their literature. Same thing for the Mormons. If we have members here that believe in such, it is not necessary to take offense to that. Its simply the way I believe and I never treat anyone rudely.

Now my uncle...he has a way of dealing with Jehovah's Witnesses. He'll go to the door in just his briefs and he's about 300 pounds and 70 years old.

Wow, talk about intollerance! So what if they go door-to-door? Heck, we get kids selling candy, adults trying to sell that meat delivery service, and kids from C3 handing out flyers about Vacation Bible school. All you have to do is either say yes or no. Is that so tough to do? Have you put out a sign to keep the Boy Scouts away? And noise from a construction site? How dare they!! If I were you I'd get my neighbors together, gather your pickforks, and run them out of your peaceful, quiet neiborhood. If you don't take a stand now, the next thing you know the Negroes will be moving in!

Yeah, we don't want their kind around here!

Heaven forbid we allow someone to practice the religion of their choice in our country...and on independence day of all days!!!

If your issue is with soliciting, then don't answer the door.

When it comes to JWs, you have to know your Bible to debate them. They are heavily indoctrinated and firmly believe what they 'witness.' From what I understand, they don't send out those ignorant in their own dogmas.

I learned a very valuable lesson in 6th grade because we had a Jehovah's Witness in our class. She didn't stand for the National Anthem or the Pledge Of Alliegence. Being the ignorant little buttholes that we were everyone started making fun of her for being different. The teacher caught wind of it and that day our history lesson was on the freedom of religion in America.

I don't remember much about the lesson itself, but I do remember at the end she said, "Children, in America we don't make fun of people for thier religious beliefs. If our forefathers had done that then there would never have been an America".

Truer words were never spoken, Miss Stashonsky!

    ?Huh?
Aren't Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons both Christian Religions?

Unless I'm mistaken, Jehovah's Witnesses do not believe in the diety of Christ. Mormons view Christ as a created being of God and not God Incarnate. They believe, among other unorthodox beliefs, that Christ visited the Americas and proclaimed "another" gospel to a race of people that have never been proven to have existed. All of this was delivered by the "angel" Moroni to Joseph Smith via the tablets supposedly buried in a hillside in NY State.

The Apostle Paul warned Christians to be wary of those who would witness any other testament of Christ other than those delivered by his apostles, even if delivered by what appeared to be an angel of Heaven.

The predominate Christian population accepts the Bible's indication that God exists as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All three being separate, yet three distinct parts of God and that Jesus was the manifestation of God in the flesh, because only God himself was pure to accept the sin debt as prescribed by Jewish law which called for an unblemished male lamb.

perhaps the OP just thought that being in close proximity would mean more frequent visits, which could then get annoying. However, I'm assuming that a community keeps track of the neighborhoods where they go to try and speak to people so that it doesn't become repetitive. I don't care what a person/group is about, but if they come to my door more than twice in the same year I'm going to be annoyed. I guess that makes me door to door intolerant. Nothing to do with what they are trying to tell me or sell me.

First let me point out that I have no objection to anyone's religion. Freedom of religion is an important issue to me. There is the separation of church and state in the government; although sometimes I wonder what happened to that clear separation. We just feel a bit like our peace and quiet is being disturbed, is all. As for them knocking on our door; it is not that simple to just ignore them. I have 3 little VERY LOUD dogs who do their job of announcing visitors. I could just let them loose in the neighborhood, much like others' pets who live around here. Perhaps that would keep everyone away. We are not intolerant people; just intolerant of people who often do not know the meaning of the phrases "I am not interested" or just "no thanks". The noise of construction does get on one's nerves when it starts unannounced and vibrates the ground. I suppose we'll have more of that later with fireworks, resulting in many, MANY runaway pets who are frightened of them. All this will pass. I understood that this forum is a place where one could post thoughts, ideas, sharing opinions, etc. I didn't know I would feel the need to defend myself; frankly I was actually surprised that my post wasn't just ignored like most of my others posts are. I am not part of the "in crowd" as they say, so that goes with the territory. If I offended people just because I mentioned something that annoyed me, I do apologize. Maybe what you are interpreting as my "intolerance" is similar to how we "Yankees" feel when you all start trashing us, telling us to move back, etc.
The daughter tells me I should grow thicker skin. I suppose she is right. But I shouldn't have to. :chillpill:

    Rock on :hurray:

  20. I didn't know there was an "in-crowd" here. There are just people that post regularly and those that don't. I don't look for a response everytime I post. I'm glad you explained yourself because initially it just sounded like you just didn't like Jehovah's Witnesses. Let us know what happens once they get the building finished. I'm curious!
