He was one of my favorite politicians of all time. I remember him doing editorials on WRAL in the 70's before he became a senator. The majority of people in this area were huge fans. Nobody could speak the truth as plain as he could.

He used to be a frequent "visitor" (patient) when I worked at Rex Emergency Department. He was an awesome patient. It was also funny to watch the Rex VIP "red carpet" being rolled out. Very fitting to pass away on July 4th.

wonder if they'll go wall-to-wall with the news coverage, pulling in all sorts of analysts and his colleagues and show his funeral live on tv and do tv specials about his life and his contribution to american culture and what kind of father he was and look into the background of his philosophy and champion his commentaries on american society and make him out to be all but a diety, like they did for Tim Russert. i doubt it very seriously.

although, i would argue that jesse helms was a much more important figure in the history of america than one newsman. sorry, still a little upset at the media for thinking that they are actually more important than the news itself...

  5. Serving as his Johnston County coordinator back in the 1996 election, I got to know the late Senator and his family. He is not like what the news media has painted him to be. He showed compassion for others and always took time to ask you how your family was doing. He was well known for his constituent service. It didn't matter who you were, his office was there to help the people of NC. What a great day for the Lord to take him home (July 4). He loved America and North Carolina.

I often visited him in Washington DC and carried up a small group of people, he always had time to see us and had a photographer to take pictures of us with him.

Johnston County in most of his elections had the largest winning percentage than any other county.

I just thought that I would shared this with everyone.
