with developmental disabilities. Any suggestions of place of employment? Anyone have to deal with this issue that could maybe write me privately? We have a few teens in the house. One is now of working age, 16yo. She will need help applying for a job & am beginning to wonder how a future employer will feel about that? She will NOT be able to do things with money or that involve memory(ie. waitress taking an order). I know this will limit her a great deal inthe job search. Any suggestions? This is a VERY motivated, well-behaved, well-mannered young lady. She puts 120% in everything she does despite her limitations. She is extremely good at clenaing and takes great pride in it. So much so that some neighbors & friends have hired her to clean their home. She is also excellent at dealing with young children and taking care of young children. Very gentle, easy going kind of person. So many positives yet she does have delays and I don't want future employers to look just at that. Yet, how can they not if I'm having to go with her for some of this paperwork & things? She is ready for the job experience. I just want to make sure she is treated the right way when we go places. I used to be a manager and we hired some folks from a special center. I can tell you now they were the hardest working by far of all my employees. I don't know if it was b/c they wanted to prove themselves or enjoyed what htey did or a combo. But it was a pleasure working w/ them and we never, ever had an incident w/ any of them. Unlike the countless other employees I had to fire due to theft, absenteeism, drinking on the job, etc. Are employers in the 40/42 area willing to hire those w/ disabilities? I know anyone can get an application but I haven't seen many around w/ disabilities. Sorry for all the questions but really want this to be a great experience for her in the local community. Thanks for reading this & hopefully someone on here has experience w/ this type of thing. stephanie--mom to 7
What about working at the movie theater? Ticket collector or helping get ordered food/drinks/snacks??
Bagger at grocery store? Greeter at Walmart? Busgirl at restaurant? Most fastfood places start you in the back doing the grunt work that does not involve manning the register.
I know Lowe's Foods hires special needs folks. There's a fella named Mikie, according to his nametag, working at the Lowe's Foods at Clayton Corners. He appears to be somewhat autistic and he is very polite. He always remembers to ask me if I want paper or plastic bags and if I need assistance getting to my car. I usually look to see which register he's bagging for and go to that register, simply because he never fails to be polite and he makes an effort to do a great job. He's not so good about eye contact, but that's ok with me because he's doing such a good job elsewhere. Depending on the needs, you may have to find a small company. If she's that good at cleaning, there are a lot of good cleaning companies out there who will hire a hard-working, efficient worker. I need someone to clean my house. What does she charge?
try contacting Johnston County industries, they should be able to help you with that or at least point you in the right direction.
I was also going to suggest JCI. They are great! You may also receive guidance at Joblink in Clayton or at JCC. The HS always have job listings in student services as well.
Thanks a bunch!!!! This was just what I was looking for. She definitely will make a wonderful model employee. I was searching for some school stuff however the other day to register her for high school when I realized a grave mistake. --she still has her green card & it expires in September! What is worse is that she never received the COC(certificate of citizenship). Called immigration and am working out the details. In the meantime, she can't work as her SS card says "valid for work only w/ INS authorization." Umm, can we say oops? So, getting her passport (ultimate American Citzenship identification) and fixing everything else from there. It is probably 3 months out before she will officially be able to work. You think they'd mind if we'd inquire now or should I just wait until all ducks are in a row so to speak? Thanks. Also, great to know that that many employers are willing to take young adults that can contribute to society if given the chance. Stephanie--mom to 7
Call JCI as BB said we have been extremely pleased from an employers perspective you will be amazed with them and what they do to place folks in to the workforce.
Thanks so much for all the responses. Now my mind is a bit at ease. Nice to know there are good employers out there willing to give people who some will consider "different" a chance at a job. Thanks a billion and I promise whoever she ends up working for will not be disappointed. She is incredible. Not just being a biased mom here either. Most days I wished I had half her motivation and drive to get a job done--LOL. Can't wait to see where she ends up working. I will deifnitely be calling JCI w/in the next week. Take care, stephanie--mom to 7
