John Kerry said; "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq." As a veteran, I am highly offended by Kerry's remarks. We have college graduates serving in Iraq. Some volunteered after 9/11. He is an idiot. And to think, he almost made it to the White House. I believe this remark will forever end his chance for the White House.
I, too, am a veteran. I understand what Kerry was trying to say. Look at the facts. In WWII, entire classes of college men withdrew and entered the service. Most of those elected afterwards had credible military service. By the time Viet Nam rolled around, the draft gave most of us who couldn't get a deferment, a letter from our friends and neighbors greeting us and welcoming us into the military. Fewer elected officials still have served. I am appalled at the conduct of an elected official whose military service is suspect. In this case, I refer to Bush. He didn't credibly serve, and his gang has wasted this nation's military lifeblood for lies, denials, and misdirection. Do any presidents come to mind who would have sat for seven minutes, in a semiconscious state, having been told that the nation is under attack, but not told how? It could have been a nuke attack, a dirty bomb, a chemical attack...but rather than saying to the students, "Kids, I have to leave. You'll know why later. God Bless the USA". Exit stage left and become the leader that he's thought he has been since he was sworn in. Talk about being asleep on watch. But NOOOOOO, Bush sits transfixed, as if he has realized that these kids comprehend the English language better than he does. Bush's 7 minutes meets my definition of high crimes and misdemeanors...
I also don't think Kerry made this remark to defame our troops, however I hope he keeps his mouth shut for the next three years.
TOO BAD BUSH DIDNT THINK TO SLIP INTO HIS SUPERFRIENDS OUTFIT AND LEAP INTO THE AIR TO DO IMMEDIATE BATTLE WITH THE ENEMY!!! YOUR ARGUEMENT IS PRETTY WEAK BECAUSE YOU SAY THAT BUSH DID NOTHING FOR THE INCREDIBLY LOOOOOOOOONG PERIOD OF SEVEN MINUTES WHILE NOBODY KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON!!!!!! NOBODY KNOWS BUT BUSH IS SUPPOSED TO IMMEDIATELY LEAP INTO ACTION BASED ON YOUR OPINION. AND THAT IS WHY YOU BACK UP KERRY???????? FACE IT THAT KERRY STUCK HIS FOOT IN HIS BIG MOUTH AGAIN BY STATING HOW HE REALLY FEELS ABOUT THE MILITARY AND BLAMING IT ON BUSH ISNT GOING TO CUT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  The National Commander of The American Legion called on Sen. John Kerry to apologize for suggesting that American troops in Iraq are uneducated. "As a constituent of Senator Kerry's I am disappointed. As leader of The American Legion, I am outraged," said National Commander Paul A. Morin. "A generation ago, Sen. Kerry slandered his comrades in Vietnam by saying that they were rapists and murderers. It wasn't true then and his warped view of today's heroes isn't true now." "The mother of a local Marine who was killed in Iraq spoke out Tuesday about the comments that Sen. John Kerry made about U.S. troops and education. "I am very disturbed. I am very insulted and very sad that he doesn't understand how highly educated and well trained our military men and women are," said Debra Booth, whose son was killed in Iraq."
BTW, I am a member of the American Legion. The National Commander spoke his views. He may even say the his views represent most of the AL. He can't say that his views represent ALL, as they do not represent mine. At least Kerry served on active duty during war time and didn't use his connections to avoid service. Go ahead..swift boat me, as well. I stand by the records of fact. Your guy in the WH can't or WON'T produce his records. And, Bling, in a crisis, 7 minutes can be the difference between survival and death. My question to you is, Have you ever taken up arms to defend this country like Stinger, I and so many others have? If so, I'll lend a little more credence to you. If not, you can at least say thanks to those of us who served to give you the liberty to freely express your thoughts.
IM ALL EARS HATTERAS6!!!!! AND THIS SHOULD BE NO PROBLEM FOR YOU SINCE YOU HAVE FIVE YEARS OF HINDSIGHT TO REFER TO. TELL ME JUST EXACTLY WHAT YOU WOULD HAVE DONE IN THOSE SEVEN MINUTES THAT WOULD HAVE MADE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE? WAITING WAITING WAITING WAITING......
I don't know....um......maybe stand up and act presidential. Just a guess that a President should do that. Remember, Bush is the DECIDER, so he should have been doing some deciding. But that's just my opinion...another Eastern NC redneck and member of the GOP.
thanks morder, my sentiments exactly. Actually bling, I was trying to give out gummy bears, rather than wait with bated breath for your reply. You apparently missed the question I posed for you. I'll use smaller words, so maybe you'll get it this time. Have you ever served your country in uniform? Ever taken up arms to defend this nation? I have. IF you have not, then we probably have little connections by which to relate experience and thought processes. As for what I'd have done, you do know that I have never sought the office of POTUS, do you not? Since I did not dedicate my life and use all my family, friends, their friends, and any connection possible, etc to be POTUS, I have no way of guessing what I as POTUS would have done. As a combat veteran, I can tell you that leaders plan..for the expected and the unexpected. We have people upon whom we rely for information. Once we get that, as leaders, we act. We ACT!...not sit and wait and ponder. Perhaps the Eminence Grise hadn't yet told his pet George what to do, as Cheney has done for all these years. Bush gets to "play" POTUS. Cheney pulls the strings and tells the dummy what to say.
Kerry was not talking about the troops, he was talking about Bush. It's kind of embarrassing to have a leader who prides himself on having been a C student (and a "gentleman's C" at that), who only got into college because of his family's influence. Just before he said this: Kerry said that Bush used to live in the State of Texas, but now he lives in the State of Denial. It was clear from the context that the remarks referred to George Bush. Now the president and the right wing media are pretending they don't know Kerry called the president stupid. John Kerry is not a talented comedian, and I wish he would stop trying to make jokes, because he doesn't do it very well. But he certainly was not defaming the troops with those remarks.
Explain what you would have done to "act presidential" had you been in his shoes during those 7 minutes. Be specific please. And how do you know he wasn't "deciding" during those 7 minutes? Do you always talk out loud when you are making decisions? I bet you are great entertainment in the grocery store when picking out your Boston Butt or your cereal for the week.
Lets translate, shall we? Kerry is talking to a group of students...thus "you" in his statement means the group of students to which he is speaking: You [students] know, education, if you [students] make the most of it, you [students] study hard, you [students] do your homework and you [students] make an effort to be smart, you [students] can do well. If you [students] don't, you [students] get stuck in Iraq. Yet you want us to believe that what he was REALLY saying was: You [students] know, education, if you [students] make the most of it, you [students] study hard, you [students] do your homework and you [students] make an effort to be smart, you [students] can do well. If you [students] don't, you [students] get stuck in Iraq [because it's all Bush's fault that you didn't study hard, make an effort to be smart and do well.] yeah right...nice reach there grandma.
USING THE KERRY TRICK OF REDIRECTION INSTEAD OF ANSWERING THE QUESTION. LET ME REPEAT IT AND LETS HEAR YOU ANSWER IT DIRECTLY!!! YOUR CRITICISM OF BUSH WAS THAT HE DID NOTHING ON 9/11 FOR SEVEN MINUTES. YOU SEEM TO THINK THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. SO LET ME REPEAT FOR YOU. TELL ME JUST EXACTLY WHAT YOU WOULD HAVE DONE IN THOSE SEVEN MINUTES THAT WOULD HAVE MADE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE? EASY TO ARM CHAIR QUARTERBACK UNTIL SOMEBODY CALLS YOU ON YOUR PLAY!!!!!
Guess even some Dems don't believe that Kerry was insulting Bush rather than the troops: Iowa candidate asks Kerry to cancel campaign visit DES MOINES, Iowa A Democratic Congressional candidate from Iowa is canceling a campaign event later this week with Senator John Kerry. Brucy Braley says Kerry's recent comments about the Iraq war were inappropriate. http://www.eyewitnessnewstv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5616595&nav=F2DO Did Kerry Hand Republicans a November gift? "I believe Sen. Kerry owes an apology to many thousands of Americans serving in Iraq, who answered their country's call," said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., campaigning in Indiana. A Democratic congressman told ABC News Tuesday, "I guess Kerry wasn't content blowing 2004, now he wants to blow 2006, too." http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/story?id=2619383&page=2
Thank you for offering to translate my native language for me. However, most of us native speakers of English realize that words are not always used in their literal sense. For example, sometimes the word "you" refers to people in general, not necessarily the person or persons to whom one is speaking. This was simply a bad joke about the President, a joke that unfortunately backfired. I agree with Hugh that I hope Kerry will keep his mouth shut for the next 3 years.
I see the caps lock key is still stuck. Maybe Devilock or ddrdan can tell you how to fix that. One thing the President could have done during that seven minutes was to find out what exactly was happening. Andrew Card whispered in his ear for a couple of seconds, hardly enough time to give him a full briefing on the situation. It's kind of hard to decide what to do next if you don't know what has already happened, and he was not going to get any more information sitting in that room. And even if you think he's multi-talented, it's hard to make plans to defend the country from some unknown attack while at the same time reading a children's book. I haven't personally read The Pet Goat, but I doubt it contains information useful for that purpose.
Please explain where the reference to Bush is in that statement. I see an obvious reference to the students he was addressing - talk about education, studying, homework, etc... ...but I don't see the word Bush or it's reference. Please tell us specifically where it is in that statement. Again, I see no reference to the President. Point that out, please and also explain why you consider that "reference" to be a "reference" to the President.
