What brought you to Johnston County? What do you intend to give back to our community to make it a place our kids will enjoy living in? I see a lot of development and I am all for it.........however, with the good, I have seen the bad. Those who prey on our community systems with no thought of keeping this community clean, quiet & productive. There is something here that lures folks in.........what are we doing to keep it that way for future generations? SAL
What brought me here......... 1.) I was brought here by birth. The best I can find in the County records (late 1700's census) my family was some of the first folks in the County. 2.) I give back to this community by helping keep our property beautiful even as construction debris, household garbage and garbage thrown from passing cars seems to find its way into our pastures on daily basis. (not being a jerk, just stating the truth) We attempt to keep our property in such a way as to take your mind back to simpler times. I also attempt to educate those I meet about the history of our County and what it cost some of our families to have the things we enjoy today. 3.) I am personally attempting to educate my children concerning the history of our County and also attempting to offer them suggestions on how to best deal with the fast growth while still maintaining the character that we feel best defined and continues to define our area. SAL
awesome! I do all of those things too! I chose Johnston County to live in, because of the schools being traditional for starters. I am not from JoCo, but was born and raised on the East Coast of NC. I also volunteer in the community, donate to the community and shop in the community. I vote for all elections too.
I moved to NC from NY as a single mom trying for a new start. I lived in Cary and Apex. I bought a house on JoCo because of the schools and the quiet living. I hate city living and driving. I am a NY country girl and I love it in JoCo. I don't mind having to drive to get somewhere, I prefer it. Even though I am not from NC it is my home and has been for 13 years now. Anyone who doesn't like it here can leave. Contrary to some people's beliefs this is my home and I will stay. I vote and volunteer in my son's schools and I am anal about my yard and home.
I moved here about two years ago after being married to the military for 13 years...I had lived in 6 other states, but truly fell in love with the beauty of North Carolina... Why Johnston County? One....my best friend lives and teaches here so I knew how impressed I was with the school district. Two....not only did I want my children to go to school here, but I also wanted to teach here...which leads me to answer your next question.... I am an Exceptional Childrens teacher in Johnston County and love what I do....hopefully, through that job I giv back to the children of our community, as well as making adults in the community aware of how wonderful my students are and that they too can make contributions in their own way.
It's where C6 was! And if I wanted to enjoy whatever time we could have WITH her, it was come to JoCo. I'm not crying about it. We love being a part of the community. She teaches at Polenta. I rabble rouse at the AAU level. Just as with KT, C6 and I are from the coast. We like the convenience of being close to, but not in Raleigh. JoCo has much to offer. It's relatively affordable, not as congested, and the people seem nicer. <-(Check back on the prior in 3-5 years for longevity's sake). As for the "Fake Wake" comment, it made me LOL. We need to incorporate, while we can, so as to have more of a voice in what happens here. Carl
Wonderful........... It is very refreshing to hear the stories of why folks came here. I pray that we can all maintain this area so others can enjoy what we all have worked so hard to create! Nice to know there are folks who have moved here that truly appreciate the area. Sometimes it's easier to only see the bad........human nature I suppose. SAL
We transplanted to NC for employment reasons, landed in Durham for a year, then Raleigh and in 2000, we ended up in Johnston County because it was rural and away from the 'rat race' I've volunteered 3 and a half of the 7 years I've been here with a non-profit humane organization. I spent 8 weeks each Spring for the past three years teaching free dog obedience lessons to groups of home schoolers and their dogs. I've spent 4 years going into Johnston County schools with one of my dogs, meeting an average of 1,000 students per year and teaching them about being safe around dogs. This past year, I mentored two Clayton High School seniors with their Senior Project (a requirement for graduation) one I worked with from September - November, the other from March - May. If asked, I will very likely assist more seniors this year. I keep my yard neat and clean, I don't litter, and I try to be a good neighbor. BTW - we have no children of our own
I moved here when I was 10 becaus eof my dad's job. He worked in Raleigh, but my parents chose JoCo because of the "country" (haha) as well as the school system. I also do not litter, am kind to people, and teach EC as well!
i am not going to bang my own drum, but we moved here 71/2 years ago due to my DH's employment (well actually he was employed in Wilson at the time but through internet research i chose here to make our home). At the time my baby boy was 14 and we wanted a safe environment for him but also access to great cultural instruction since i homeschooled. i have become extremely involved in our community since moving here and after one year here my middle son, his wife and 2 children followed us due to how much we loved it. As to what i have contributed to our community, those that know me already are aware. JoCo is home and i cannot see my family ever living anywhere else (unless i win the lottery and can buy a place at Surf City:lol
I grew up in west Raleigh, was college-educated in KY and met an Ohio boy and lived there 10 years. When we got to move back this way nine years ago, this was by FAR the best place to be...small town/country atmospheres, local schools and reasonably priced homes. When we moved here, we could hear the cows on Cornwallis and an occasional rooster. Now I hear the highway, because all the trees were cut down up at 40/42 to make room for restaurants and hotels. Sigh. I still get to drive by the cows, though. I also really really like that my kids are going to school with the same kids they've grown up with...in Wake Co. I went to a different school every year from 5th - 10th grade (and it boggles my mind that the Wake Co. school board is even worse now that it was then). I love the locally owned stores and veggie stands/ strawberry patches. Hate the McMansion subdivisions that are popping up...Praying that when I get to heaven that I don't get a mansion on a golden street, but a shotgun house under an oak, by a pond.
moved here in 03, rented a townhouse for 2 years in clayton. then bought my house in smithfield in 05. im not going anywhere for a little while
We moved to JoCo 2 years ago because our oldest was getting ready to start kindergarten and there was no way he was going to the wake county garner schools! the schools here are sooo much better!
My daughters (and dogs) enjoyed your class. It has been over a year and they still remember what you taught! The young homeschoolers in our group were blessed by one of your visits a few years ago. We'll need to get up with you in the spring to see if we can arrange another visit.
Nice to read these stories, I agree with SAL sometimes its easier to see the bad in people when they move in, glad to know that so many of you came here for the schools and "the country" lol feel of things
Hi ! I moved here about five years ago. I am very happy on joco. and it has done great thing for my daughter too! We are good ex-yankees..lol
