Smithfield, NC -- The Central Johnston County wastewater transmission system experienced a discharge of untreated sewage from a force main located along White Oak Creek near Dory Lane, Clayton. The discharge was discovered on September 17, 2014. The spill was caused by a pipe failure, and an estimated 460,000 gallons of untreated wastewater flowed into White Oak Creek of the Neuse River basin. The pipe line was repaired to prevent further discharge. The spill has been reported to the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Division of Water Quality.
