Riverwood Middle School students have raised $3100 towards relief for
the victims of Hurricane Katrina. During the second annual Penny Wars,
students competed to see which grade level could collect the most
pennies (dollars and checks were welcomed as well). Each day at lunch
students brought down their contributions and poured the pennies into
large collection bins. The catch was that silver change counted against
the grade level total. And so, the battle began when students sabotaged
each other's collection bins with silver coins. Most notably, the
winners of the Penny Wars were seventh grade students with a three-day
total of $1,500. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the
    American Red Cross.

Students at Four Oaks Middle have collected over $1,800 to send to
American Red Cross for Katrina Survivors. Competition between grade
levels has been very successful in this effort. The school's PTA has
hosted "Helping Hands for Hope" on behalf of the American Red Cross.

North Johnston Middle School has completed its Katrina Relief fund
drive with a grand total of $1,117.35. This money will be donated to
the Red Cross specifically for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
