She's Region's Teacher of the Year KENLY-- Sonya Kiser, an English teacher at North Johnston High School and Johnston County Schools 2006 Teacher of the Year, has been named the North Central Region Teacher of the Year by the Department of Public Instruction. She now advances to the state competition which will culminate on May 1 with the announcement of North Carolina's top teacher. The regional announcement was made on January 29 before friends, family, colleagues, students, and government officials, and Kiser was escorted by her brother Jarvis Ellis to the stage to accept gifts, warm wishes and make a few remarks. Ellis is an assistant principal at North Johnston High School, where she teaches. In addition to remarks from her Principal Ross Renfrow, Dr. Anthony Parker, Superintendent of Schools; Fred Bartholomew, Board of Education Chairman; and Board of Education member Butler Hall; representatives from the state department of education; and, a former regional teacher of the year, the brief assembly featured two appropriate musical renditions by two students. Her husband Chris, who teaches music at West Clayton Elementary School, cut in for the last bars of the tune. When Kiser stepped to the podium to accept the award, a student yelled, "Mrs. Kiser for President!" Johnston County Schools once again salutes Sonya Kiser!
