Can anyone recommend one? Driving distance, like going to Raleigh, for a good reputable Dermatologist (skin specialist) is not a problem. Thanks! CakePrincess
This was discussed before in the yearly skin cancer check thread. I saw Dr. Oyler who partners with Dr. Andrus and Associates (919) 782-3782, and it is a good thing I did. She did a simple mole removal (size of a pencil eraser) from my forearm. But pathology report came back saying it was an early malignant melanoma in situ. Had to go back for larger surgical removal (big scar now!). But second path report said she got it all - clean tissue margins. Yaaaaayyyy! Per the American Cancer Society: 1 million Americans get skin cancer every year. Of those, in 2007 almost 60,000 will have malignant melanoma. And of those, over 8,000 are expected to die (over 15%). But not me! I can't tell you how very close I came to NOT GOING! But so, so glad I did.
I took my son to a dermatologist to Azalea Skin Treatment Center (919) 772-3487 It was just for moles, but we liked them.
My family LOVES Dr. Edith Winter. She's off Millbrook Rd near Six Forks Rd. (North Hills area sorta). 788-9070 She is a one woman show (Read: Office) & does not push the "look 30 years younger" stuff. She is not all about cosmetic 'work'. She totally KNOWS her stuff. Great bedside manor. She has been super with my 79 year old aunt as well as my FIN & me. LOVE HER.
Just an FYI on Azalea, I took my son there and did not like the dr. at all. My mom and grandmother didn't like him either. If you want someone compassionate to your situation, you may want to pick someone besides Azalea K
Unfortunately, I have to agree with the above poster, I have posted before about my not so good experience with them. Their "wait and see" approach left me with an inch long scar on my cheek. It should have been taken more seriously to start with and I would have had a much better result, I had to see a plastic surgeon.:?
I go to Dr. Katherine O'Rourke at Blue Ridge Dermatology (Near Rex Hospital). She is great! She knows how insurance works and explains things to you in terms you can understand about any condition she may discover. I have had basal cell carcinoma, shingles, and some annoying skin tags. She has treated me for all of these things and has even called my home (or had one of her nurses call me) to check on how I am doing. http://brdermnc.com/index.html
I went to Azelea and I thought they were just fine. I had these teeny little mole looking things on my hand, and I can't remember what she called them, but they aren't cancerous. She even did a biopsy just to ease my mind!
I had a good experience for my son - it was small bumps that was minor, my mom on the other hand had a major rash and they couldnt do anything for her, she had to go else where for treatment, I think for minor things they do good but anything that is major should go else where for treatment
I have had major skin issue my whole life. If it is minor you may be ok going anywhere. Azeala skin just likes to perscribe the basic meds that are popular at the moment and they are miserable at diagnosis and compassion - as far as I am concerned. THe place by Rex hospital is more interested in getting you money and talking you into cosmetic proceedures. Dr. Wilmoth is more like one of those TV doc who thinks he can breeze in and out and doesn't have to actually talk to you. There is another one in Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh that was pretty good - but I hope you have insurance. THere were others I had been to but they left no impression. I gave up and went to Duke. I now take 4 different meds. She took the time to listen and explain. After all these doctors I knew what worked and what didn't. I now see regually the PA Elizabeth West. Young girl but she knows her stuff. Inconvient - yes, but worth it. PM me if you want to talk - I have learned an awful lot over the years...
If you don't want to go to Raleigh, there is Polley Derm. Clinic in smithfield...they're only there certain days though. K
This is a old thread but wanted to advise that we just received a bill from Azalea for $25.00 and description is "No Show". My wife and I used to go there. Have not been there in several years. All I will say this is not the first billing problem we had with Azalea and we decided not to return there several years ago because of other concerns. We agree with above post.
We must have just been lucky, they went above and beyond for us and my son was thrilled with the results. Guess we went on a good day.
Just to let you know that I called for my first appt and they kindly want to see me asap, which is fine with me. Then I asked for yearly skin cancer check-up and the next available appt. is next summer! Wow!
Found one I just went to Blue Ridge Dermatology up by Rex yesterday and saw Dr. Ghatte for a full body check. She was very nice and I was pleased with the clinic and front office staff. I had seen several recommendations for them on the message boards, and then several negative comments also. So I decided to try them. I was pleased and will go back, they were all very nice !!
