Was anyone else's light bill extremely high last month?
I went from 2604 KW to 4300 KW in a month and it has never been that high.

Just wondering if anyone else was having the same heart problems as me right now?????

Mine was higher than normal, too. This happened last year I think about the same time. I even had them come re-read our meter. They said there was no error but the following month it was much lower and evened out. So I'm hoping the same will happen with our next bill.

They tend to spread out their rate hike for Christmas over the span of a couple of months, hoping most won't complain too loudly.

I had a notice in mine last month that said it was higher, but it was because of the higher number of billing days. This month was lower than October...I'm confused too!

Don't know, ECU. Moved. It seemed high for the amount of time I was there, but I have to wait for the next one to see.

Heat pumps suck in cold weather!!. I try to keep my thermostat set at about 65-68. Also, if your "auxiliary" (sp?) light comes on you better bend over when your next bill comes :)

We called and they are going to check our meter...something definately does not sound right. We are not even here during the day so I really do not understand.

But most of the people I have talked to have said they had extremely high light bills.

Oh yeah, on another note, went to the doc today and I now have the strep throat....after the stomach flu.....now this.....the doctors office is slammed full and people are still coming. Hope you all stay well!!

Mine went way up too, close to double. My kWh increased by 1576 over one month. I know it's been cold in February, but this bill runs from 1/11 thru 2/12. I don't remember it being all that cold in January?

We have a heat pump and the thermostat is on 72 during the day and 67 at night. We used to keep it colder at night, but now with a little one who is all over her crib at night and won't stay under a blanket, we bumped it up to 67.

But still...... I guess I'll call them too.

Mine was $112, up from $75 last month. Looking at the 13-month bar graph on the bill, I used just a bit more electricity last February; the only other month I used more was August. My house is all-electric, so it makes sense that the hottest & coldest month of the year yield the highest bills.

My mom's went from $140 to $240 and she uses her gas logs as well when she is home. That is the higest it has EVER been in that house...in 20 years.

My bill has been about the same for the last 3 months....actually this months was a few dollars cheaper!! Went from $112 to $109. (KWH used 1124, avg per day 35) We don't mess with the thermostat, keep it at 68, use gas logs at night lately to knock the chill off, but its still chilly in the house....we wear sweats and socks. (We have about 1400 sq ft house.)

Thanks for the response Ken! Yes we do turn it up to 72 when we get up. I never noticed the emergency switch coming on, but then again I haven't been really checking either! I'll watch it from now on.

I never knew to open and close the blinds at certain times. Our westerly blinds are a spare bedroom and hallway, so those blinds were staying open and the easterly blinds are our bedroom and bathroom, so those were staying closed. Unfortunately, the other easterly windows have a screened porch outside that keeps the sun from coming in. I will try what you suggested - makes total sense. Makes me wish I had the blinds that will open and close with a remote!

We do have gas logs and have been using them a lot this month. With a toddler I really don't feel comfortable with a kerosene heater.

I expected the bill to go up with all the extremely cold weather, I just never expected it to go so high! Thanks for the advice - I bow to your expertise!!!

I'm not sure about that. There are vents along the top and bottom of the metal part of the face of the fireplace. There is no fan or anything. Is that what you mean by vented?

Also, a question about the ceiling fan. We have a 20 ft high cathedral ceiling in the family room (where the fireplace is). The ceiling fan is set to blow down and we do not have a ladder near that high so we have never changed it. Since the ceiling fan is that high up, does having it blowing down on low circulate the air good enough? You cannot feel a breeze when it is on low. We have been using it like that because we figured it was at least circulating.

One last question, should we have our thermostat set for the fan to be "on" or "auto?" I thought having it on would keep the air circulating, yet it would also use more electricity. What do you think?

All my neighbors was saying the same thing. Ours was actually 4 dollars less than last month. I tell you what my secret is.. Refusing to pay a high electric bill by wearing coats in the house and keep the temp around 65.

Ken, just one question about kerosene heaters - isn't it a good idea to have a carbon monoxide detector if you run a kerosene heater? I know they are a lot safer than they used to be, but just to be sure. Also, should the CO detector be mounted near the floor, not up high like a smoke detector, because carbon monoxide is heavier than air? Or is that the LP gas detector I'm thinking of, and the CO detector can be at any level? Ok, I lied, that was more than one question. ;)

Keep it on auto, it will circulate when the heats kicks on. Keeping it running constantly (on) causes more wear and tear on your outside ac/heating unit and it uses more electricity.
