Anybody else getting low connections speeds on roadrunner? I'm getting about 1Mb/s. Sometimes even dial-up speeds. It started in the last couple of days. I did have the wireless open but turned that off and it didn't help. I think they may be throttling me since I had a P2P running. I even tried running Linux to see if that helped but it was still slow.
My RR did fine, During the week I had a 2 gig file that Verizon EDO said would take 12 hours to download (attempted 3 times unsuccessfuly) download in less than an hour Friday evening on RR.
speed been a little slow off and on, freezing up on yahoo page but stopped after about an hour. Seems ok now. I just get tired of having to dial that big ole IP number on my old rotary phone though, every time I want to get online. Takes forever and wears my finger out.
We ended up going to RR turbo, but still have issues especially when all of the gamers are home. So glad they are all back in school. Too bad so many of them ended up going to JCC and Wake Tech.
How to check where the "slowness" is... One of the first things to do is to power cycle ( unplug, wait 5 literal seconds, then plug back in ) your cable modem and router ( if you have a router ). The modem downloads its configuration each time it powers on and will grab any changes that have been made by RoadRunner. If the power cycle doesn't work, the next thing to try is to look at a traceroute. This literally traces the route that the information from your computer takes to get to the website you are trying to access. To do a traceroute in Windows: Open a command prompt (Click on Start, Click on Run, type CMD, Click on OK.) type tracert www.yahoo.com and press enter You'll see output like this: C:\>tracert www.yahoo.com Tracing route to www-real.wa1.b.yahoo.com [69.147.76.15] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1 2 3 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.0.1 3 16 ms 13 ms 13 ms at1-0d253212.gnvlsc-db-cr001.nw.nuvox.net [64.89 .66.1] 4 24 ms 31 ms 13 ms 207-67-11-89.static.twtelecom.net [207.67.11.89] 5 128 ms 125 ms 125 ms 216.115.11.50.alter.net [216.115.11.50] 6 128 ms 126 ms 126 ms ae-6.pat1.dcp.yahoo.com [216.115.102.174] 7 128 ms 126 ms 126 ms ae2-p161.msr1.re1.yahoo.com [216.115.108.67] 8 128 ms 126 ms 126 ms te-9-4.bas-a1.re1.yahoo.com [66.196.112.207] 9 128 ms 126 ms 127 ms f1.www.vip.re1.yahoo.com [69.147.76.15] Trace complete. C:\> In the example above you can see that the "slowness" happens between steps 4 and 5 and is most likely a problem with alter.net. If the slowness happens in the first 2 or 3 steps it is most likely a problem with RoadRunner locally. If the problem happens with the first step it is most likely your cable router ( if you have one ). Sometimes when you talk to an intelligent person at RoadRunner support ( that's hit or miss ) they'll ask for this traceroute information so they can "see" where your issue really is. Without it, they just plain don't know. Don't forget that programs like LimeWire or BitTorrent will use all of your upload bandwidth and make your connection slow as well. Turn off any peer to peer programs that you may have running. Hope that helps...
