    What's next Book Burning?

If this has already been posted I apologize...It is very difficult to scan through all the other threads since their are so many joke and current event threads to wade through.

I presume you have no problem if the school makes available "Kama Sutra" to elementary school children, right? I mean, if you ban one book, then the next thing will be book burning.

Far be it from me to suggest banning books. However, like everything else in life, there is apprpriate and inappropriate material for children. While I have not read the book in question, if it is as described (and no one has denied it in the article), then it is not appropriate for school children.

I'm glad you don't have the final say clif.

Your circular logic doesn't fly here.

Thanks for the response anyway. :p

He (or she) is probably the type of person who would throw a beer bottle (or a spittle can) at the sign just out of spite.

Let me make your day again Clif, I must agree. there is appropriate and inappropriate material for children. I also have not read the book, but I'm sure books do find their way to the shelf that do not need to be in an elementary school. Why would it make someone ashamed to be from Johnston County to remove a book from the school shelf that is inappropriate for a child to read? A child should be led in the way they should go...... not given full reign to read & watch what ever rolls in front of them. It is a parents job to "monitor"
what your child is reading and watching. Thanks to the parent that caught it and if your ashamed to be from Johnston County for this reason, I'm sure there are alot of people who would be glad to help you move out. If thats the worst Johnston County has going on, I would consider myself lucky and be proud to live here.

Go figure why we have so many pregnant teens. Get rid of the filth.
These are young minds we're talking about. It's beyond believing why someone would support having such trash in the schools.

I take it back...I'm not ashamed to be in Johnston County, I 'm ashamed to be associated with you people who are so quick to tell a person to go packing just because they don't share your point of view.

Good thing the folks of Johnston County are so open minded. Lets ban a book none of us have read and tell people who oppose said banning to leave.

    Yay Johnston County!!!!! "Heil Hitler"

By the way...nice avatar comment. You got to be kidding right? Have you taken a look around this forum lately?

I've been in Johsnton county since the day I popped out over 30 years ago. I'm not going anywhere so you might as well save your snarky comments telling me to leave.

If you are looking for your missing Jesus Fish bumper sticker, don't blame me!:evil::evil::evil::evil:

Says the person who claimed to be ashamed because they didn't share the same point of view as the people in the article.

I don't think you are quite aware of what banning actually means. No one is preventing the book from being read by an age appropriate individual. As far as reading it, no I haven't read it. However, according to the article you read, no one has disputed the contents it is accused of having. Do you dispute it (for that matter, have you read the book yourself?)

I noticed you completely avoided my question as to whether you feel "Kama Sutra" should be made available to elementary school students. But I don't think you will answer that question, though. If you answer "No" then you are invalidating your original argument. If you answer "Yes", you will never be able to explain how it is you feel that "Kama Sutra" is age appropriate.

Well, there's a real intelligent reply. Gee, I think I just might have to frame that one. Apparently it would seem that if we feel that pornography isn't appropriate for children, then we are no better than Nazis.

All hail the all wise hinkypuff who would give children Hustler Magazine!

Sorry, apparently while I was responding to your post, you felt obligated to add to it.

No one is insisting you go. But why would you want to live in a place you are ashamed of? We all presumed that, if you were so embarrassed, you would want to move.

I wouldn't want the Kama Sutra in schools but you would be surprised at some of the books that are banned, although not for sexual content. Catcher in the Rye, Fahrenheit 451, The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn, the Grapes of Wrath....

They aren't banned. Maybe restricted, but not banned. The children can possess their own copy of, say, "Huckleberry Finn" on school property without retribution.

Ah....here we go again with the morally righteous making blanket assumptions. The article posted in the link makes no claims what so ever the book is available in elemtary schools. It does state that the parents who started this had a daughter who is attending West Johnston HIGH School and that the book in question is available and taught in several other district HIGH schools.

Since when did a HIGH school with grades 9-12 become an elementary school?

    Clif,

    Here is an interesting read.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudo-intellectual

Pseudointellectual is a pejorative term used to describe someone who engages in false intellectualism or is intellectually dishonest. The term is often, though not always, used to describe one who regularly critiques the work of professionals, while lacking the requisite background knowledge and experience to have an informed opinion. Synonyms for this character include sophist, and in medical terms, mountebank and quack.

I guess you don't agree with being ashamed of our government from time to time either. Do I need to be like a Holywood Actor that moves to France becasue they disagree with actions by the Us Government.

Clif, you know the old saying about assuming.

Have at it. I haven't gotten my fill of crazy comebacks yet!

    ;)

I was the one who asked about "Kama Sutra" in elementary school (a question still unanswered, by the way). The question is a valid one. The book in question was being removed because of complaints that it was inappropriate for the age level for which it was being made available. My question was simply expanding on the idea. I wanted to know, if this book was not inappropriate, at what level was Hinkypuff willing to admit s/he was a Nazi.

Whether it's elementary or high school, these are still children who are not legally allowed to make some decisions on their own. Perhaps, instead of "Kama Sutra" in elementary school, I should have asked if s/he felt "The Illustrated Jenna Jameson Picture Book (Unabridged edition)" would be appropriate for high schoolers.

Finally, as I have pointed out twice. No one in the article disputed the claims of inappropriate content.
