My dear, 70-something, I-Love-Lucy-like mother is on top of the house again! She's a neat-aholic and doesn't like for ANY pine straw to collect on the roof or in the gutters. So, rather than calling me from next door, she'll drag the ladder around to the front porch, get out the leaf blower and climb up on the roof and start blowing. But, alas, that's the way she's always been. She doesn't wait when she wants something done. Just "rolls up her sleeves" and starts working. She's very active and walks a couple of miles every day. Always moving until bedtime when she'll finally stop and read the morning paper. So, should I hide the leaf blower? Anyone else got any relatives like this?
My grandmother is like that. Pure fireball at 76 and planning to get married again this fall. My Mom was too til she shattered her leg last year, but she's about to get back in the saddle. She wanted to go tubing with us on Sat something terrible! :jester: She did get a scooter and ride around Hershey Park with us though, heck Grandmother walked it til she got too hot. I hope to be that spunky as I get on in years.
KENT!!! Good grief man - hide the leaf blower!!!! My MIL up in PA is 64 and went ROLLER BLADING about a month ago and damn near broke her tail bone when she fell. She walks EVERYWHERE, after every meal, etc... she's cazy.
love it and hope i am still going strong like that at that age, my Mom is 82 and she still goes out and mows the grass, gardens, walks every day, works out with her weights and treadmill and travels a lot - i keep telling her i cannot wait till i am retired and i have time to get in shape:lol:
I saw on the news I think yesterday, there was an 80something lady held a bench press record for her age. Here are 8 other inspiring elders http://www.oddee.com/item_96618.aspx
She better be careful, though. A relative of mine has a nice house on a golf course in Myrtle Beach where he has several active, yet senior neighbors. One man was trying to cut limbs in a tree. He fell out of the tree and died from his injuries. Scooting around on the ground is one thing, but messing around on top of a house is probably too dangerous at her age. However, I know how it probably goes...try telling her that. Right?
I feel like I should get off my lazy tail and DO SOMETHING after reading that. Kent, tell your mamma I'm coming to her house for some flowers.
I wish I could do that....Go Granny, Go Granny, Go Granny Go! I went on my roof this weekend to do the same thing, became terrified to crawl down and was stuck up there for an hour until my BF arrived. I think it's great she can do that!
Luckily it's a low-pitched roof! I see out the window that Mama's out in the yard pushing a wheelbarrow around and that the riding lawnmower is out. Energizer Bunny has nothing on my Mama!! LOL
That's good, though. I'm sure she knows her limitations and there's no sense in being a wallflower. Might as well get out and enjoy good health when you have it.
It must be the generation! My Father always said the place to find a helping hand is at the end of your own arm.
my father was like that also. We lived in south florida and when ever I would come over he and I would go up on his roof (with barrel tiles) and take the pressure washer and wash the roof then pressure wash all the gutters. And what ever we couldn't get with the pressure washer he would have me laying on my belly and scooping out all the muck out of the gutter. Thankfully I am in NC now bud sadly he is now in a nursing home.
Yes, I have one. I have an 83 year old grandfather who climbs on top of the house. He will not accept help from anyone for anything. He has 2 bad knees and 1 bad shoulder and still gets out the ladder! We need to rope him down.
NO KIDDING! Mama doesn't know it yet but I'm going to gank some Cannas from the beach house in a few weeks when it gets cooler.
