These are the refrigerators listed on the story: Jenn-Air, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Maytag, Preforma I don't think the Whirlpools refrigerators are included, but I'm calling just to find out because the problem mentioned in the story seems very similar to what happened to my refrigerator last week. http://www.walletpop.com/article/_a/bbdp/maytag-recalls-16-million-refrigerators/376805
Wow, that is pretty scary, especially if you are not home. I mean, everyone needs a fridge and it has to stay running, not like you can shut it off everytime you leave the room or house. What in the world are they going to do with all those recalled refridges? Like there is land fill room for that. Why don't they just send someone to everyone's house and repair them.?
I don't think the recall is actually saying to throw out the refrigerator. It looks like they just want to replace the faulty part. "Consumers were advised to contact Maytag to find out if their refrigerator is included in the recall and to set up a free in-home repair. Its toll-free number is 866-533-9817."
It wouldn't hurt to call the 800 # if you have a Whirlpool as Whirlpool bought out Maytag a few years back and some of these defective units may have the same parts when they were manafactured.
I tried calling, but the individual I spoke with at whirlpool said my refrigerator wasn't included in the list of recalls so there was nothing more she could do. I sent an email to Whirlpool explaining that the part that starts my refrigerator's compressor burned up last week in much the same way they explained in the recall. I also gave them the part# and whatever other information I could still make out on the part. I don't know that it will make a difference ... but it couldn't hurt.
