McGee's Crossroads Elementary is co-hosting the North Carolina Teacher Academy's Reading First: Critical Components for K-2 from June 7 through June 10. Seventy-eight teachers and administrators representing ten Johnston County Schools are learning about instructional strategies, skills, and resources to support the reading and writing curriculum in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Sessions will focus on comprehensive study for teaching reading in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

The North Carolina Teacher Academy is a staff development organization created and funded by the N.C. General Assembly. It supports the professional growth of qualified teachers providing quality staff development. The Academy trains teachers in the areas of school leadership, instructional methodology, core content, and the use of modern technology. Partnering with local school systems allows the Teacher Academy to impact the teaching practices of large numbers of teachers from a single school system.
