My overdrive light is flashing on and off. I looked it up in the manual and it says that I need to have the transmission serviced. I drive an 02 Ford Explorer and it doesn't have a dipstick (to check the fluid and possibly put more in?). I am not really in a position to spend a ton of money with a shop right now. Anyone know anything about cars? Or know someone reputable? Thanks!

and it may or may not FIX the problem. A typical service (It there is EVER a typical service?!) is changing the Auto Tranny filter & fluid. You drain the fluid, look for metal shavings (a bad thing) remove anything else that is in the way, drop the pan and replace the filter. Replace all in reverse order & hope for the best. With so many auto tranny's being 'electronic' that bring another failure nightmare... Good Luck.
In my car (01 Ford Escape) there is a button (on the gear shift) that you push in for 'overdrive' and sometimes it gets pushed (out) and that type of light comes on my dashboard.....could it be something as simple as that? :-D
Took it in today, and there is "something wrong", they aren't going to be able to tell until they drop the pan and look for shavings. If there are shavings, that's bad, if there aren't, then it's still bad, but not as expensive. Ugh...
Good Luck. DH tries the "snake oil" "Trans X" as a first step. It worked wonders for us on my Grandaddy's Olds. It's worth a try. The oil/fluid is some sort of 'formula' that is supposed to recondition auto tranny seals. You can buy it at most all auto parts places, prob. Wally World too.
depending on mileage i would expect some metal filings and clutch material in the fluid or at least on the bottom of the filter. if the light is blinking then get someone to pull the codes out of the cars ECU, i think autozone can do this for you for free. once you get the codes search on google for what the code means, or just email me and let me know the code and i will look it up for you.
They've looked up the codes, and honestly I forgot what they said, but what it boils down to is that it is either the tranny or the cylinoids? I'm not sure if that's the right word. :?: Either way it's going to cost a buttload of money that we really don't have. Yea me, lol....
DH reports tha that tis a common FORD tranny failure (lights) OD blinks He said the joke is that OD lights really mean - "Sell Me Fast". Good Luck.
Yeah, I did some research last night and found that Explorers have a bad rep where transmissions are concerened. The good news is that I don't have to replace the tranny. The bad news is that I need a new cylinoid pack, and epc, and an update to the valve body, and all that and a bag of chips is still going to max out my credit card. Grrrrr
