Okay, I have a friend that is needing to locate resources for help for her son. Though she lives in NJ, I thought some of you may known someone w/ diabetes and where to look for resources. Here is the email she wrote me: We moved to NJ in September. Our boys were on CHIPS in TX, and the process to get them on the same type of program here is taking a long time.We have called weekly since our arrival, and remain in a state of waiting. Our son is a type 1 diabetic. We had extra insulin, which is nearly gone, and have had to change from insulin pens to vials of insulin, because we do not have pen tips. Tell her to find her local chapter of JDRF and call the American Diabetes Asssociation. They will help her. She can also go the forums at www.childrenwithdiabetes.com A local hospital should have access to a diabetes clinic. There is no reason that her child should go without insulin or be afraid of that.

My daughter is type 1 so I know the high costs of supplies, even with insurance. I'm not sure what brand of insulin pens your friend's son was using (novo nordisk or Lilly) but both companies have patient assistance programs.

Tell your friend she can also search for a Community Health Center in the area. You can go to these clinics and pay based on your income. Many also participate in the federal 340b medication assistance program to assist their patients in getting free or reduced cost medications.
