OK, I'm officially old. A band has to have had their first album at least 25 years ago to be nominated. I had the Adidas shoes and everything I was such a huge Run DMC fan. I wore out my first "Raising Hell" tape so much so that I had to buy a replacement for it. I got into Metallica during "...And Justice For All". For all the things they did to make me ****ed with them, i.e.: Napster, "St. Anger" etc., they are a truly awesome band. People say they sold out once the "One" video came out but I could care less.

Basically, when bands or groups get nominated that I know instead of stuff from before my time I truly realize I'm getting older. These two should be shoe ins but who knows with the voters. Because it's "Sad But True" that "It's Tricky" getting into the Hall on the first ballot. <<<Yes, that was corny, but I don't care.

CLEVELAND — Run-D.M.C. could "Walk This Way" into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The 1980s rap act, along with Metallica and the Stooges, are among the nine nominees for next year's hall of fame class, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation announced Monday.

The other nominees are guitarist Jeff Beck, singer Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, War, Bobby Womack, and disco and R&B group Chic.

The list is notable for the wide range of musical genres represented - hip-hop, metal, punk, disco and R&B - and the large number of first-time candidates. Only Chic, the Stooges and Jackson have been previously nominated.

"It's an interesting group because it really shows the nominating committee showed some thought and energy into who should be inducted," said Joel Peresman, president and CEO of the New York City-based Rock Hall foundation. "It truly shows it's never a closed door for any artist to be nominated."

The five leading vote-getters will be announced in January and inducted April 4, 2009, in Cleveland.

The ceremony typically has been held in New York but is returning to Cleveland after more than a decade-long absence. Tickets will be made available to the public for the first time.

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five opened the door for rap at the Rock Hall as the first hip-hop act to be inducted in 2007. Now, Run-D.M.C., nominated in the first year of its eligibility, has the chance to follow on the strength of rock and rap blends such as the 1986 cover of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" and classics like "It's Tricky" and "My Adidas."

"The big thing they did is took hip-hop more into the mainstream," said Jim Henke, chief curator of the hall of fame and a member of the nominating committee. "They did combine a lot of rock elements. As far as hip-hop groups go, they're certainly right there at the top."

Metallica jumped on the heavy metal wave of the '80s and 25 years later is still selling out arenas. This month the group released "Death Magnetic," which marks a return to its early speed metal days.

The Stooges, recently given props in the film "Juno," get another shot after last appearing on the ballot two years ago.

Left off the ballot were Stevie Ray Vaughan and Bon Jovi. Both had been eligible for the first time. To be nominated an act must have released its first single or album 25 years prior.

"They're great artists," Peresman said. "People's time comes for whatever reason when it does."

Rock fan Neil Walls, who started the Web site futurerockhall.com two and one-half years ago to discuss which of today's artists could end up in the hall of fame, said this year's nominees offer great diversity. But he questions why artists like Kiss, Alice Cooper, Peter Gabriel, Chicago and Rush keep getting snubbed.

"They need to go back to at least nominating 14 or 15 to at least give the voters more of an option," Walls said. "It really puts the power in the nominating committee's hands."

More than 500 musicians, industry professionals and journalists vote on the inductions.

Come on, St Anger wasnt that bad. I kinda like it, especially when the wife and kids are out of the house, and I can really crank it up.

Yeah, I'm old enough to remember all those thing as well. The first time I heard of Metallica was when a friend got suspended from school for wearing one of their shirts. The one with the knife sticking out of the toilet.... Metal up your *#@. Nowadays, the teachers probably wouldnt bat an eye @ it.

We'll agree to disagree on St. Anger. Pure crap in my opinion. I liked Load though and ReLoad for that matter. A lot of people don't. Oh well huh?

Count me a semi St. Anger fan. The bigger question is Where is Judas Priest? Run DMC before the Priest? Spare me!

I'm not a Priest fan but I recognize their importance in the heavy metal genre. All the leather and spikes clothing was started by Rob Halford wearing it. Little did people know that he was gay and just dressing the part. Then everyone else picked up the style and the rest is history. I guess its sort of like the "saggy" pants style nowadays. Probably most kids don't know where that style was started. Not to mention the infamous trial in the late 80's or early 90's where the the guy killed himself and his parents sued Judas Priest saying it was their music that drove him to it. They were found not guilty by the way.

Well if you feel old, we must be about the same age. LOL

That one song, is the reason rap is where it is today. No question, no argument. I loved it too and still do.

I'm with UNCFAN, I can't believe it takes this long for the Hall of Fame. Folks our age can remember like it was yesterday for Reverend Run and the boys. I can still hear my parents now yelling at my brother and me to "turn that mess down". "You can't even understand what they are saying". I miss those days. Going the old "dances" at FO Elem, and begging the DJ to play those songs and them saying they couldn't. Man i felt like a rebel.

I agree with you enthusiasm for Run DMC but the Hall of Fame only puts a band on the ballot after there first album has been out 25 years. That's their rule. I guess I worded it wrong. So in other words in 1983 Run DMC and Metallica's first albums came out. I may be wrong if anyone wants to google it.

I can't remember what i was doing in 83. I think i was 8. Anyway my brother who is 4 years older than me, he had the RUN DMC, stuff and Metallica. Even the old LL Cool J, I Need Love and Mama said knock you out. This thread is making me smile just thinking about that old stuff. We have Time Warner and get those music channels. Me and B just sit and listen to the old school rap channel all the time. Usually when i am cleaning on Saturdays. Good times, good times.

I will never forget the NWA. There is another group I have been thinking of lately but can't remember there name. They did some weird songs. It wasn't the Beastie Boys. I'll think of it in a minute. I loved and still do love Slick Rick, Rob Bass, KRS 1. Those were the days.

    KISS?..........:jester::jester::jester::jester:

You slay me. Two songs. "Rock N Roll All Nite" and "Beth". I think they belong in for their "brand" and stage show. But music? I'll have to disagree. But hey more power to ya.

BTW, I did dress up as Gene Simmons when I was five at Halloween. When the whole "backward masking" thing came out in the 80's, my Mom burned my Kiss Double Platinum album. She wouldn't let me go outside because one of the "demons that were coming from the fire" could enter me. I kid you not. Now I go online and see how much that the album is worth and I whimper a bit.

And Madonna has done what for Rock n Roll?

The Pretenders have had a bigger influence over rock, or music in general, than Kiss? They are in.

    Prince?
    The Flamingos?
    Parliment?

Maybe it's because Gene Simmons is perceived as such an "butthole". I like Prince though. Purple Rain still holds up. Madonna is in because well, om, she, om.........The rest though, who knows?
