Does anyone suffer from migraines and if so what do you use to get rid of them? Or to stop them from coming on?
DH just took the kids to the lake and I opted to stay home because I always end up with a migraine. I don't know if it's the heat, the sun or what. I'm usually good for 2 or 3 hours then it starts. And I don't get the predome symptoms either (I learned a new word). It just starts. Sometimes I get an aura or smell odd smells. But days on the lake or any outdoor summer activity that lasts a while, they just come.

So ...what do you use? I was thinking of asking my dr about topamax. Currently, I use zomig.

The only thing that works for me even a little is to take Maxalt AS SOON as it starts and go to bed.

Treximet is the best thing we have found for migraines. One can actually function when taking one of these pills. Migraines are not fun and I have tried many things throughout the years. Treximet is the only thing that helps get rid of the pain and still allows me to do what needs to get done.

    Hope all is well,
    Sherry

I have started seeing a neurologist in Chapel Hill. After 20 years of migraines I am finally almost migraine free. I would get them for 5-7 days at a time!! Instead of treating the symptoms, she finds the cause and works with you to STOP them. The first appointment was 1 1/2 hours long one on one with the head of the neurology department!

She figured out what my triggers were, why I was getting them and how to avoid them.

After a sleep study we found out some problems with my sleep etc.... this has been life changing (and without much medication)

I do use relpax if I feel one coming on, but they are few and far in between.

SO.... I guess what I am saying to anyone who suffers from migraines, look into why you are getting them... it has really changes my outlook on life!!! :)

Very interesting. Thanks for the information as my teen has been getting them for a while now and I would prefer that she did not have to take medication. I would also love to understand the reasons she is getting them. I have had them off and on since I was 16 but mine are farther apart now.

    Thank you,
    Sherry

My migraines were from excessive consumption of aspartame (artificial sweetener), for my whole life drinking diet soda and I gave that up and migraines disappeared after a few days, but when I had them, they were so bad, death was not a bad option, my head hurt that bad. Now I only have 1/2 small bottle of diet soda every other day and I can handle that with no headache.:)

I used to have daily migraines. After being put on a daily preventative of Nortriptyline, I am pretty much migraine free. I will still get an occasional migraine but it is normally under control within a couple of hours. I've tried just about everything to relieve them. Topamax left me topastupid-couldn't complete a sentence. Depakote gave me Parkinson like symptoms-hands shook so bad I couldn't hold a glass.

When I do get one, I take Imitrex in shot form. That works the best.

My wife suffered from week long migraines. She started seeing a neurologist at Raleigh Neurology and they finally found a drug combination that prevents them. Just a note, stay away from a Dr. David Cook in Cary, he is a QUACK!

I have a really really bad headache ever so often, but not bad enough (or frequent enough) to seek a doctor's advise. Basically I take either something early on like Vanquish or Excederin, try to consume a little extra caffeine.

A rheumatologist told my wife one time that with pain you want to catch the horse before its out of the barn. He was a bit quackish himself, except for that golden rule of thumb.

I get them too, they are an awful thing and makes it hard to be a Mama! I have taken Maxalt, which worked well but gave me rebound headaches the next day, Treximet but that left me feeling like I was dragging for a week. Now I take Imitrex and it is the best option for me. I have to take it before going to bed for it to work, otherwise I get nauseated. But it is in generic form now so cheap copay and I don't have any other side effects. I think you just have to see what works best for you, it seems to be different for each person. Thankfully I only get mine once a month at "that time" so mine are hormonal.

Mine were Aspartame (artificial sweetener) related, and I haven't had a headache now in years since I figured that out:)

I take a Darvocet or 2 and go to bed..... I find I've had fewer since I started taking Lexapro for anxiety that was stress related.

I know that lack of caffeine can bring one on for me, as well as stress and sometimes being out in the sun too much.

Don't laugh...but sometimes a coke and a handful of good salty potato chips can give me some relief.

Caffeine used to cause me headaches when I didn't get enough of it. I weened myself off of the daily caffeine dependency and now if I have a soft drink, its usually just one can a day. I drink mostly bottled water with a sugar-free, caffeine-free powder for taste.

I take Midrin at the onset. Don't have them very often anymore. Sometimes it will make me sleepy, but VERY RELAXED. But sometimes I can take it and don't feel any effects but headache relief.

Caffeine was a problem for me too. I avoid it entirely. I drink water for the most part. If I want soda, I drink RC diet cola-no caffeine, no calories and no aspartame!

I've never been able to acquire a taste for Diet Rite. They lack a citrus flavored drink with Spenda, which I've always been more interested in over a cola. There's no competitor out there for Mountain Dew or Sun Drop that is made with Spenda. Frankly, I don't like colas that much. If I drink a dark soft drink, its either Dr. Pepper or A&W Root Beer.

Coke or Mountain Dew with a Goody's or Excedrin helps me sometimes and the salty chips help the nausea. I kept a food diary as well and that has cut them down drastically except for the hormonal ones. Unfortunately I have had to cut out wine pretty much all together(I am talking about even an occasional glass), especially red.

I guess it could be said that perhaps a number of migraines are allergy-triggered when when come into contact with things in which we are overly sensitive.
