Hi All, I'm moving to a larger location, luckily three doors down from my current one, I am looking for gym size mirrors for the new studio, anyone have any leads? Also how do I get the old ones off the wall without breaking? I was thinking of pulling a wire thru the back to cut the mastic while we pull slightly with suction cups, anyone have a better idea, I'm open. thanks bernard www.redtangsoodo.com
http://www.barbourglass.com/ I am sure these people could help you. They are good people! Honest and hard working.
What is the surface they are glued to? Sheetrock? My sister in law had a dance studio and I helped her move her mirrors. The options we were given was cut the mirror loose by taking the sheetrock with it or the process below. The wire trick works best if you can find gigli wire. I know that sound funny. Gigli wire is what they use to cut thru bones. It has cuts and braids in the wire that makes teeth like a saw. The bigger diameter you can find the better. Any surgical supply has it in 30" lengths that you can loop together or tag strings to the ends and work on each glue circle individually. We got lucky and found a continuous spool of it. Before using the wire get a heater with a blower and pre-heat heat the mirror and heat continuosly while sawing. If you don't the mastic gets hot/melts when sawing and after the wire passes thru it rebonds. By keeping the mirror hot it keeps the mastic from rebonding firmly. Make some large wooden wedges and slide them in the gap at the top of the mirror. As you saw down push "very" gently on the wedges to increase the gap to keep the glue from rebonding. We broke one pushing to hard on the wedges. It takes 4 people to do the job and insure you don't drop the mirror to the floor after it's cut loose. To clean the thick pieces of mastic off the mirror we used Xylaleen (sp?) but NO scraper. It left scratches, just a rag. I don't know if it was the right way but it worked!
