Is there anyone out there with access to an engine hoist. He needs to replace his water pump and the engine has to raised. Or does anyone know someone who can do this for a very reasonable price, he has the parts. Thanks

    U-haul rents em.

Wish I knew the type of car.... I havent met a car I couldnt change a water pump on without pulling the engine. Sometimes you just have to remove the motormounts and jack the engine to one side. Tell him get the Haynes manual and it'll walk ya through it.

His manual said to lift the engine to give you space to change the pump.

Here's another manual he can look at: http://autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/0e/f8/89/0900823d800ef889/repairInfoPages.htm

Like was said he may have to use a jack underneath the engine to raise it a bit, but not remove the engine. If he's having problems reaching things it may help to remove the tire and spash guards on that side and go in through the wheel well for the lower stuff. I'm assuming he doesn't have the V6, otherwise it would be right there in front of him. Some of the 4cyl engines require removal of the timing belt, some run off the serpentine belt. If he has to take off the timing belt, have him replace it. It's cheap and while he's got it off anyway..... Does he know which engine he has?

its a 4 cyl. it is timing belt driven so i have to take off the timing case, but in order to do that i have to remove the altenator and the serpentine belt. the problem is, i can't fit a breaker bar in between the tensioning pulley and the engine compartment to relieve the tension on the belt. once i do that i can fit in there to remove the a/c compressor and the coolant resevior, and then get to the timing case. you're right, my last car was a 6cyl and was a hell of alot easier to change out.

Get a broom handle or something like it and push down on the top of the tensioner arm.

    Ahaa!

"Lift the engine" is considerably different than "get an engine hoist and remove the engine". Remove the mount, and jack the engine outta the way so you can get to it. Having changed the water pump on a Beretta (same car) of this vintage, it is an extremely labor intensive job. Took me an entire day if I remember correctly (90% of which was getting the radiator out without mangling it). I however am an EXTREMELY good mechanic with all the correct tools and talent. Take Joe Schmoo an entire weekend and then some

Perhaps you should consider the truth that he is in over his head. There is no shame in this, tell him he was born 20 years too late. Cars used to be easy to work on, now they are a pain.

If he chooses to do it anyway (he prolly will). Post the address and when he will be doing it and I am sure some of the capable mechanics on here can zip by and lend a guiding hand.

Sounds like you got that 2.4L, same as my wifes 97 Achevia. I hate that motor. If it is, I now understand why you have to lift the engine. There's no room in there. I've put 3 alternators in it, so I know it's tough to get to anything on the front/side (it's fwd) on the engine.
