ALEIGH: The N.C. Department of Transportation will temporarily close the outside lane on I-40 East between Exit 306 (U.S. 70) and Exit 312 (N.C. 42) in Wake and Johnston counties, beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, through 3 p.m. on Friday, April 13, weather permitting.

Motorists traveling on I-40 should expect delays during the lane closures and are encouraged to use an alternate route if possible.

The posted speed limit for this work zone is 60 mph and will be reduced to 55 mph during lane closures.

The closures are necessary to perform paving operations as part of the U.S. 70 Clayton Bypass, currently under construction. The $123 million project was awarded to S.T. Wooten Corp. and is expected to be complete in June 2009.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit. Plan ahead before driving by visiting the NCDOT Traveler Information Management Web site at www.ncdot.org/traffictravel or call 511, the state’s free travel information line for current travel conditions.
