    For baked beans.

Hmmm... come to think of it - is there much difference? I *did* buy Northern Beans at the store. :)

Shhh. Don't give all my secrets away. Usually I buy Bush or something comparable, drain it, and add my own ingredients. THIS time I decided to make them completely from scratch, just looking for some ideas. I will still experiment and make it my own.

kaci, what do you think then of just adding the usual stuff? Throw some strips of bacon on top and bake (after the soaking and cooking of the beans of course).

honestly i am not a baked bean fan but i remember my Mom always used brown sugar and some onions too and definitely laid the bacon on top when baking.

That's how I remember it. And like seabee, I throw in whatever else I have. Molasses, honey, ketchup, bar-b-q sauce, mus-My Friend, whatever. :)

Do you think I will need a small can of tomato sauce for a base, or just skip it?

No, I rarely use my own cookbooks anymore unless I am looking for a specific family recipe. Otherwise I google and pass them off as my own. LMAO! Kidding...

probably skip it, the ketchup will give it the bit of tomato flavor, it doesn't need much.

I always use 2 cans of Bush's original (drain some of liquid); to that I add 1/2 lb cooked and drained ground sausage and ground beef; then I mix in separate bowl, ketchup, mus-My Friend (just a little) brown sugar and worchestershire sauce. I don't have the exact measurements (I think maybe 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup ketchup, little mus-My Friend (maybe 1 or 2 teaspoons) and a little worchestershire - it should be a sweet/tangy taste. Then I add that to the beans and bake at 375 for about 1 hour (plus or minus oven)

Hmmm... I've never added sausage or beef - that sounds pretty good.

:iagree: Although think about it... if its good enough for weiners... why not some good sausage or venison...
