I have used the Veterinary specialty hospital on Tyron RD...They are good.

Do I need an appointment at night or on the weekend?

VSH has veterinarians on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. At night, on weekends, and during holidays the emergency veterinarian on duty sees walk-in emergencies and cares for hospitalized patients. No appointment is necessary but we do appreciate a phone call, if possible, so that we might prepare for your arrival.

    NC State Vet School

NC State vet school has an emergency clinic. 513-6911. http://www.cvm.ncsu.edu/vth/vthsupportsaaes.htm

You can walk-in, but good to call or have someone call for you so they can be prepared better for you.

Located near the fairgrounds. From I-40, take Wade Ave. Blue Ridge rd exit, turn right on blue ridge (toward fairgrounds). Very soon on your left you will see red sign for vet school. At the end of the road, turn right, small animal clinic is a couple of buildings down on the left.

Or, from 440 beltline, take hillsborough street away from NCSU, toward fairgrounds. An entrance for vet school in on the right. Small animal clinic is first building on right (I think).

This is kind of far from our 4042 area, I'm sure there must be closer ones as posters mentioned above. But it's good to know it's there just in case. Also if your pet is very old or sick, they have a lot of specialists on staff.

    what are the cat's symptoms?

several months ago my cat acted very strange, eyes and body rocking back and forth, thought he'd been poisoned...turns out he had feline vestibular syndrome. eventually he got better, but was very scary for a few days not knowing what was wrong with him.

I have a cat who has that also.. he walked like he was drunk for a week or two.. had a real hard time judging his jumps. I took him to the vet and she said she had never actually seen this syndrome before, but had just finished reading about it just a few weeks before. Every now and then he has a little flare up of it, but nothing like the first onset, I was scared he had a brain tumor or something. We just refer to him as "crooked head" now.. LOL

For anyone who doesn't know.. it's kind of like vertigo, but feline-ish. Its an inner-ear disorder.

LOL, we call ours crooked kitty ....he still sits around with his head tilted, or misses his jump, but overall pretty much back to normal.

But like you said, so many people, even vets, don't know what's going on and they run all these expensive unnecessary tests and it ends up just being vestibular. You can google 'dizzy kitty' and find links about it.

Hi everyone, I want to say thank you for the concerns about my cat. We took him to NCSU Vet School and they found a grapefruit-sized cancer in his small intestine, which explained why he couldn't eat/drink and unable to go to bathroom. He was in alot of pains. The doctors said it was inoperable since the cancer spread too far advance. I decided it was best to put him in sleep to end the suffering. I held him in my arms and prayed with him. He purred and meowed me to say that he loves me. It was a very sad goodbye moment I've had in my life. We took him home and prayed again, then bury him in our backyard. I miss him already and in tears.

Again, thank you for your help in finding the vet, especially on weekend.

CakePrincess, I'm so sorry you lost your beautiful cat. You did the right thing, staying with him to the end, even though it must have been hard for you.

Sorry to hear about your cat. I had to do the same thing to my 18yr old baby a couple of weeks ago. Its never easy but I am thankful that I was lucky enough to spend time with him for the last 18 years, he will never be forgotten.

So sorry for your loss of your pretty kitty. The best thing you can do for your pet is to know when the right time is to let him cross that rainbow bridge. He thanks you for your love and attention.

Actually.. because it was so fresh in my vets mind, the symptoms and all, thats what she treated it as, and we only paid for the office visit. I lucked out with not having to pay for a gazillion tests and outrageous vet bills.

Aawwww CP.... so sorry to hear you had to let a family member go. You did what was best, and he loves you for it. I know plenty of kittys at the Rainbow Bridge that will welcome him and play with him until you can meet up with him again some day. He's an angel kitty now....I'm sure he's already got his wings!!
