Has anyone eaten at the New China Star restaurant in the new Lowe's Foods shopping center on 42? I think it is next to La Piazza. We are considering getting take out tonight and would love any opinions from those who have eaten there.

    Thanks for any help.

No, but I am :allears:. We love chinese food, and there is absolutely no place to get any in Clayton anymore. I stopped in the one in the old Winn Dixie shopping center earlier this week and their sanitation grade was only 90 and that looked generous! I turned around and walked out. Last night I got industrious and between a recipe I had, and Cleo's from the other day, made our own sweet and sour chicken. It was GOOD! Might try for some beef and broccoli this weekend, I have an awesome recipe, although a bit complicated if you want it.

    Beef & Broccoli Recipe

8 medium dried black mushrooms (opt)
1 pound beef flank or tenderloin steak
    1 tbsp vegetable oil
    1 tsp cornstarch
    1 tsp salt
    1 tsp sugar
1 tsp soy sauce (light or dark)
    1/8 tsp white pepper

    1 1/2 lbs brocolli
2 green onions with tops (opt)
1/4 cup chicken broth or cold water
    1/4 cup oyster sauce
    2 tbsp cornstarch

    2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tsp finely chopped ginger root (this is important!)
    1 tsp finely chopped garlic

    2 tbsp vegetable oil
    1/2 tsp salt
    1/2 cup chicken broth

Soak mushrooms in warm water until soft, about 30 min, drain. Rinse in warm water, drain. Remove and discard stems, cut caps into 1/2 inch pieces. Trim fat from beef, cut beef w/grain into 2 inch strips. Cut strips across grain into 1/8 inch slices. Toss beef, 1 tbsp veg. oil, 1 tsp cornstarch, 1 tsp salt, sugar, soy sauce and white pepper in glass or plastic bowl. Cover and refrigerate 20 minutes.

Cut broccoli into 1 inch pieces. Cut lengthwise gashes in stems thicker than 1 inch. Place broccoli in boiling water. Cover and cook 1 minute, drain. Immediately rinse under running cold water, drain. Cut green onions into 2 inch pieces. Mix 1/4 cup chicken broth, oyster sauce and 2 tbsp cornstarch.

Heat wok until 1 or 2 drpos of water bubble and skitter when sprinkeled in wok. Add 2 tbsp veg. oil, rotate wok to coat sides. Add beef, ginger root and garlic, stir fry until beef is brown, about 3 minutes. Remove beef from wok.

Add 2 tbsp veg. oil to wok, rotate to coat sides. Add mushrooms, broccoli and 1/2 tsp salt; stir fry one minute. Stir in 1/2 cup chicken broth, heat to boiling, stir in beef, heat to boiling. Stir in cornstarch mixture; cook and stir until thickened, about 15 seconds. Garnish with green onions.

    Same owners?

We love the China Star on 210, although it's not as good as it used to be. The egg rolls are better than anywhere else I've tried.

    Is this the same owner/manager?

yes, same owners. The husband is running the new on next to us (La Piazza) & his wife is still running the one at 210/40.

They were busy for lunch yesterday (friday) Have not tried this location

We've tried the ones at Food Lion 210 and 42. We much prefer the one behind Smithfield's / the strip near Pizza Inn @ 40/42.

Golden China is the one behind Smithfield's at 40-42. It's the only one we choose. Excellent food, great service..CHEAP.

I do have to agree with you on that. They seem to be slipping a bit of late the last couple of times I went there but I'm starting to get hooked on their sesame chicken. Just stay away from that tea they serve.

Tried the new joint today. I use Shrimp with lobster sauce as my litmus test for every Chinese restaurant I eat in. If that's good, I'll try more. WAAAY too much MSG...Won't go back.

I too tried them, hate to say it but it was not good. I had chicken and broccolli and hot and sour soup. I hope it was just because they just opened. But the items are pretty much staples, so I figured they would be good. Not the case.
