    Hi:

I need a piece of furniture repaired. Would prefer someone who comes to my home to do it. Know of anyone?

    Thanks,

    PB

What piece(s) of furniture? What kind of damage?

The side rail on my bed is broken. It's still functional but there is a big crack in the wood and I know I'm going to get in bed one night and it's just going to break all the way. I will prob. have to have the side rail replaced but I'm trying to see if there's anyway it can be repaired.

Repair is simple, you could do it yourself (and save big bucks). You will need some carpenters glue (the yellow stuff the looks like Elmers) and a clamp (or two, depending on the length of the crack). You will also need a toothpick.

Squeeze a good layer of glue into the crack. Use the toothpick to push it in. Use the clamp(s) to draw the crack tight but not too tight that all the glue is squeezed out (some will still squeeze out). Finally, using a damp cloth, wipe off the glue beads that appear on the surface of the rail. Leave the clamp on for six to eight hours to give a chance for the glue to cure completely.

    Excellent response Clif!

Being a Management Systems Consultant I would follow up with if you determined the "Root Cause" of the problem.

If you have the same issues that I do you may just break this again.

    How old is your bed?
Most furniture is under warranty for 1 year--even if it is your fault it is broken.
Check with the store where you bought it.

It all depends on the way the original bed clips fit the headboard and footboard. I had the same thing happen to our bed because of playing around with my children jumping on the bed. I went to Lowes and was able to get the same size board as the side rail. I dissambled the existing side rail to use the bottom mattress rest and the hardware parts to fix it myself. I sanded and stained it and you can't tell the difference. Matter of fact it is alot stronger now.
You could probably find someone that refinishes furniture like a used furniture or antique furniture to do it for you.

Depending on how old the kids are I'd make them pay for it!

(My little sista broke my nose while jumping on the bed and she wasn't supposed to be.)

    Flame away... :boxing:
