My sister and her husband from Germany will be visiting us this fall, they have been here before but it's been well over ten years ago. Other than going shopping I'd like to show them a few things while they are here.So far Jordan and Falls Lake,Raven Rock Park have come to mind. Your suggestions will be appreciated Thanks in advance!
Raven Rock (to me) ain't worth the drive. But, of course, that's just my opinion. You have to walk about a mile (one way) to the river and then you discover basically you were standing on a big rock much of that time. I'm not really opposed to the hike since I'm used to walking anyway, but to me its just not that great for scenery or interest. Of the nearby state river parks, I like the Cliffs of Neuse because to me the scenery is better from atop the cliffs and they also have a small museum there, too. Plus, you practically park on top of the cliffs so not a lot of walking unless you choose to take some of their nature trails. Kinda far though from Raleigh. If they were interested in the Civil War, Bentonville would be a good choice as would be the Bennett Place in Durham. Depending on the timing, the State Fair would be fun. Of course, the history and natural science museum downtown Raleigh is good. If they like antiques, carry them downtown to Selma.
If my family were in from Germany, my short list of places to go would probably include the Carolina outlets, Kanki, the farmers market, Duke gardens, Mudcats or Bulls game, maybe the Segway tour downtown, and the beach.
Thanks to you both for the great tips! I also thought about maybe Seagrove,Beaufort,Uwharrie Natl.Forest so far...
:iagree: Absolutely, especially if you have never been! P.S. There are a number of famous Pottery studios to tour out that way also.
Yes,Asheville would be nice! Probably not Biltmore, only beause they got enough castle touring in Germany
Places you can say afterwards, "I've been there": Highest elevation East of the Mississippi = Mt. Mitchell Tallest Dam East of the Mississippi = Fontanna Dam (The dam people up there are as friendly as they come. Don't forget to by some dam souveneirs and try some dam bait for the fishing. The dam lodge is a nice place to stay.) Mayberry (Mount Airy, NC) If they've ever watched Andy Griffith they'll like it. Floyd's barbershop, the jail, one of Andys cop cars, and the dinner (Snappy Lunch) are all there. Tour the Movie Studio in Wilmington. http://www.screengemsstudios.com/nc/ If you like wine, the Yadkin valley wineries are pretty good visits.
I agree with the above suggestions and will add some things they won't see in Germany - http://www.cherokeemuseum.org/ http://www.westernncattractions.com/village.htm http://www.lovevalley.com/
You're not right! I would check out Wilmington and/or the mountains. (Asheville, Blue Ridge Parkway, Mt. Mitchell)
