Our dd is finally ready to trade in her toddler bed for her first big girl's bed. We are torn on whether to go with a twin size or full size. A twin size would take up less room and leave more space to play in her room, but a full size would allow sleepovers in her room. We do have a guest room, so that could be used for sleepovers. Looking for input from other parents as to which size you went with. Also, what are your recommendations on where to buy a good priced mattress? Thanks for any help!!
Mine both had twin size and then a couple of years later wanted full size, so I guess to save money I would just go for the full size to start with. Don't know where to get good cheap mattresses, to me they are all expensive. When you buy the mattress you usually get the frame free anyway, unless your child wants some fancy bedroom set.
you could go the daybed way that has the lower bed that pulls out for sleepovers - that is what my dgd has and she loves it and works great when she has friends over.
We went straight to a full size. Our son is a wallower and I figured he'd never stay on twin. Plus, its works out good when he feels bad and wants his mother or I to lay with him. Unless they have a closet for a room or do cartwheels in there, a full will still allow plenty of room to play. The downside: Choices of themey mattress sets. Many of the most popular sets are twins. Target is a favorite of ours for more child-themed full size sheets. Plus, their cotton sheets feel more like cotton rather than a Brillo pad. Of course, you can always go with jersey cotton (tee-shirt) sets if your kid isn't really picky.
Thanks for the ideas! I think we are going to buy just the mattresses for now since I think they come with the metal frame. Then we can take our time looking for a headboard/footboard on Craigslist. She already has a dresser, etc. I'm leaning towards full size since I would like to have something that she will stay in until she grows up and moves away. Her room is not huge and she does love to play in there, but I think we can make it work. So where is the best place to find a mattress set?
We purchased a single about 3 years ago mainly because the room is small. He is almost 8 now and the bed is getting small for him. It is a nice captains beds with drawers under it. I would get the bigger bed if I had a "do over".
We got a Twin for our son and bought from Original Matress. They were much cheaper than a name brand and are built the same.
That's what I was worried about. I had a twin bed until I was 14, but dd already shows signs of being much taller than me!
How long have you had it? Just wondering how they hold up over time. I have never shopped there, but it was definitely one of the places I wanted to look at.
There's a place that sells mattresses over behind Cook-Out at 4042. That's where we bought our son's mattress and box spring set. Very affordable, too. I think it's a Riverside Mattress if memory serves me correctly. Its held up pretty well, but keep in mind that despite all warnings, your child's bed will likely get stood on and bounced on. I think my son's boxspring has a bad spring now, but all in all, its holding up very well for no more than we paid for it.
Here's another thought.... If you decide that the room can accomodate a Full size (approx. 54" x 75") mattress that is approx. 15" wider than a twin but the same length, then I suggest that you also consider a Queen size which is approx. 6" wider than the Full and 5" longer (unless you go with the extra long Twin or Full which are the same length of the Queen... approx. 80"). Since typically there is not a huge diff in price between Full & Queen (they are all expensive and need to last forever), a Queen may easily grow with your child or serve as a comfortable size for overnight guests in the future. Also, most secondary bedrooms these days are only big enough to suit their name...BED rooms, since when indoors, bonus rooms/playrooms have taken the place of the need for "play areas" in the same room as you sleep. So, just passing along something that was whispered to me a long time ago... A few inches can make a difference!!!:jester:
