DD was going to speech therapy at Wake Med in Clayton. She's 5. Unfortunately, they had some turnover and scheduling changes, and no longer have a pediatric speech therapist available early enough in the day (before 3pm).

My alternative right now is to take her to Wake Med in Raleigh. Not that I mind, but her 1st appt there was this morning, and they've already called and cancelled. Thank goodness I wasn't already on the road.

Ga$ price$ being what they are, I was wondering if any of you had children with speech therapy locally. She's not in Kindergarten yet, so the school system is out.

I've heard Kids R Kids has some type of speech therapy program, but not sure what it is.

    Thanks for any help!

Don't count the school system out yet. My oldest went to speech before kindergarten, he was 4 or 5 I think... It was in Smithfield. My memory really is shot! Ask the speech therapist at the school she will be attending about it. I'll ask DH. (his memory is better than mine. If none of that works I'll contact the therapist where my kids go and see what she can tell me.

Mine started at the Clayton Wake Med when he was 3 or 4 and went to the one offered by the school system (in smithfield) and when he started kindergarten he continued there (in Clayton).

I would check into the schools. My son's speech teacher told me that she sees preschoolers and she will be seeing my son next year even though he will be in a private school. He is currently at West View Elementary. I'll just have to take him up there for his sessions.

Can you go through the county? A friend of mine is a speech therapist, she contracts through the county or you could contact her directly, she owns her own practice. I'll pm you with the info.

You can go through the county, which is affiliated with the schools. I took my 4 yo for an evaluation, and he passed, but if he didn't they would have started to work with him through the schools. It's a Smithfield number, but can't find it right now. Look through threads on here, I just got it a couple months ago on here, someone gave it to me. Good luck. PM me if you can't find it and I'll see if I can find it. They were very nice, helpful.

I'll search for the county #. She doesn't qualify right now for the school system. She tested OK for them. However, the principal at her school in the fall said she'll need it. So, I'm back to square 1 with the school system. Her private speech therapist (Wake Med) wrote on her last eval that she was delayed by 1 yr.

I'll take all the info/pm's you can send me! Thx.

I have someone coming to my house starting on Wednesday. I'll ask her for info. It would just be the same copay but nice having someone coming here instead of the gas to go elsewhere. What they do is get a bunch of clients all located in the same place and go house to house. My son's is at 8:30am to 9:30 am. Next client is down the street right after us. This place was recommended by the audiology department. I know there are quite a few speech therapy places in Clayton/ Garner area. Just haven't been to them to give recommendations. I'll let you know how it goes Wednesday and give you her info. Good luck.

Hi! You might want to check with Johnston County School office, since I heard that they're offering preK program and you might want to ask them if they can provide a speech therapy for your child. I think they just started a new program for children who want to get an early start at school before enrolling kindergarten.

My other suggestion would be to talk to NCSU's Audiology Department. They might offer speech therapy there. Other would be to contact to any audiologists for a list of speech therapists recommendation.

Also try Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (under Dept of Health and Rehabitation) and ask about it, too.

    Hope this helps. :)

As others have said, you can get your child assessed and then possibly served by the school system. Expect though they will not serve the child unless there is a signifcant deficiency. Call the Office for Exceptional Children and they should be able to put you in touch with the person who does the assessments.

You're absolutely right! They will NOT service your child IF they do not believe there is a deficit even if you have PROOF from outside professionals. Unless you go to mediation about it, they won't give your child speech therapy if the school's therapist does not believe they need help. Trust me on this one. I have one w/ severe, severe CAPD(central auditory processing disorder) and has needed speech for years. I've fought every year, had outside evals at IEP meetins, doctors' recommendations from several facilities, etc. and they would not give it to her. Sad. So, definitely go find a place for now which is what I think you're shooting for anyhow. I'll try to have that # for you on Wednesday and ask her some questions. Write me at home and I can get some questions for her that you might wnat me to ask her. Good luck.
