I was just at Wal-Mart in Smithfield, and the fabric dept is completely gone. They still have some crafts, but no fabric at all.

The store is a bit of a mess...looks like they are doing some rearranging all over the place.

All of the Wal-Mart stores will be eliminating their fabric departments by the end of this year supposedly.... Very sad.

The Smithfield Wal-Mart is one of the older Supercenters in the area and it has a lot of foods that I've notice cater more to the hispanic community more so than Clayton. What I can't understand is why there is no Supercenter in the Garner/S. Raleigh area yet. The current Garner/S. Raleigh store is too small and its parking lot down right scary at night.

I often travel around eastern NC and happened into the new Wal-Mart in Pickle City (Mount Olive) and I actually liked the store. It reminds me of a Lowes Foods on the grocery side and the rest of the store kind of had a Target appearance in a way with the typical Wal-Mart style warehouse ceilings with A LOT of skylights. They weren't even burning the lights in the store except in the customer service center and the frontal stores. Apparently, the new generation of Supercenters are more energy friendly.

It's a simple concept, now standard in new Wal-Marts: Let the sun shine on the store floor, dim the fluorescent bulbs and cut daytime lighting costs by as much as 80 percent.

I think it was last fall that the town of Garner approved a Super Wal-Mart. At that time they said it would be build on 401 ... vacant land just south of K-Mart. I've not heard an update.

71 acres in Garner sold for $3.5 million

    From Staff Reports

GARNER - WLA Garner Retail LLC paid $3.5 million for 71 acres off U.S. 401 near Pinewinds Drive in northwest Garner.

WLA is a subsidiary of Aiken, S.C.-based WRS Inc., which develops Wal-Mart shopping centers. The company is assembling land for a 246,000-square-foot center called the Shoppes of Garner, said Brenda Compton of Hartwell Realty, who represented the seller.

The retail vacancy rate in southern Wake County was 7.4 percent at the end of 2006, down from 7.6 percent at the end of 2005, according to Karnes Research.

I bought some fabric at the Clayton store and asked the young lady when they were planning to get rid of the fabric department (in case I didn't get enough and needed more). She said that the people lobbied and that that particular Wal*Mart decided to keep their fabric department indefinitely.

    YAY!
We need a Jo-Ann's or something out this way. I wish I didn't have to go to Raleigh/Cary to find a fabric store. Although few people seem to sew their own stuff anymore. The fabric store by the TJMaxx in cary just went out of business.
