AT SPRING FLING, THE DOCTOR IS IN

From time to time, even stuffed critters get a little under the weather.

A missing button here. A bulging eyeball there. The occasional broken leg or dangling arm.

And this May, a local veterinarian will be on call to doctor these tiny patients and help their owners bring them back to health. The "Teddy Bear Clinic" is just one of the activities meant to bring fun and learning to North Carolina families at the Noah's Landing Spring Fling on May 19-20.

Noah's Landing, a non-profit nature center in Coats, houses more than 50 species of exotic animals from around the world. During a typical week, elementary school classes and visiting families take hands-on tours of the facility with trained guides. During the Spring Fling, families will get the chance to learn from those guides, meet the critters face to face, and take part in crafts, games, and other activities. At the end of the day, staff say they hope families will have fun but learn along the way.

"Our Spring Fling is really meant to broaden our audience. We want families to spend the day having fun but we also want to show even more people these amazing animals and why they are so important to the world," says Dora Turner, director of Noah's Landing. "Our facility is not about walking around and looking at animals. It's about discovering new ways to learn about science through hands-on activities."

Noah's Landing has "docked" in Harnett County for the last three years. Over that time, their entry numbers have more than doubled since the first spring that they opened. This spring, the farm plans to host more than 2,000 public school children, alone, from March to June.

"We've been so lucky to have the support of so many schools and so many members of the community. The Spring Fling is our way to have some fun with those families and to raise money for future exhibits," Turner says.

Future projects include the construction of additional handicapped-accessible bathrooms and an innovative "Wetlands Walk" to feature waterfowl, salamanders, turtles, frogs, and an American alligator. All funds raised by the Spring Fling will benefit the critters at Noah's Landing and future endeavors.

The Spring Fling is a two-day event, starting Saturday, May 19 at 10 a.m. Entry is $6 per person with additional fees for food, crafts, and souvenirs. In addition to the "Teddy Bear Clinic," guests can construct animal frames, paint suncatchers, decorate visors, and assemble magnets and hand puppets. There will be a "Touch Zone" so families can get face to face with insects, reptiles, and birds, including hissing cockroaches and giant African spurred thigh tortoises and a "Feeding Zone" so kids can hand carrots to "Victoria" the Grants zebra, donkeys, llamas, and horses.

Guests will also have a chance to see the newest arrivals at Noah's Landing, a newborn horse named "Sophie," two llama babies, and baby chinchillas.

I thought that at first that it was the one on Barber Mill but I see this one is in Coats. DOES the one on Barber Mill have any open house hours that anyone knows of.

I have never been to the one in Coats, but the people who run Noah's Ark are very friendly!

Noah's Landing in Coats is a great place to visit. Polenta 1st grades took a field trip there, and I heard all positives from the kids and the teachers. They even have a Shackleford Banks pony that was part of a Pony Roundup kind of thing we discuss in our newest book. The horse, Diego, is quite friendly and acclimatized. Other animals were interesting as well.

I was told that the ladies there are extremely knowekdgable about every aspect of the exotic animals and that it was the best and most informative field trip that the PES 1st graders have taken.

It's a go to place.........

i agree with H6, it is a wonderful place and Dora is great - so knowledgeable. Did you know the White House requested her Bunny for their Easter Celebration because it is one of the largest in the Nation? She didn't get to attend but her bunny was there:-D

Noah's Ark on Barbour Mill is moving. They were given until June to relocate. Apparently the land owners are divorcing and whoever is getting the land is no longer offering it to Noah's Ark. Last I heard they were looking for land and possibly considering closing the ministry. They have moved many of the buildings and animals off the land. Has anyone heard if they will continue with the ministry at another location?
