Smithfield, NC -- The Central Johnston County Wastewater Transmission System experienced a sewage spill at the Buffalo Creek wastewater pump station on October 21, 2011. The spill resulted from a mechanical failure of the station’s wetwell level control system. An estimated 300,000 gallons of untreated wastewater flowed into Buffalo Creek. Upon discovery of the spill, the pump station was immediately repaired and returned to service, and a mobile pump was setup and water in the creek was pumped into the County’s sewer system.

The spill has been reported to the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources- Division of Water Quality.
