Smithfield, NC -- The Central Johnston County wastewater transmission system experienced a sewage spill on June 11, 2013 near the intersection of Buffalo Road and Hospital Road. Extremely saturated ground conditions resulting from tropical storm Andrea caused a manhole failure, and an estimated 300,000 gallons of untreated wastewater flowed into Buffalo Creek, a tributary to the Neuse River. The spill has been reported to the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Division of Water Quality.

This notice is required by NC General Statues, Article 21, Chapter 143-215C. For more information, contact the Johnston County Public Utilities Department at (919) 989-5075.
