Car salesman is not a "get rich quick" job

I spent 35+ years with General Motors Corporation. 17 moves, 10 different states, etc. There are Auto Dealerships and Auto Sales Personeel that have excellent reputations and make lots of money. But the car salesmen that make lots of money have been in the business for many years and treat their customers fairly.
My recommendation is if you want to be a car salesman pick a manufacturer that you like their products and then contact a dealer that sells these products and apply for a sales position. With long hours of prospecting, follow-up and honesty with your customers in a few years you can do very well. Expect to work evenings and Saturdays. But don't expect your customers to follow you to several dealerships and several manufacturers. It will not happen.
If you are looking for a "get rich quick" job do not take a job in auto sales.

I have no personal expereince with this so for what it's worth ... just this afternoon I was listening to some talk radio show and the guest was "the Christian Car Guy" www.christiancarguy.com The topic was buying and selling cars. From the bit I heard it sounded like car sales is a tough business if you are honest. One guy called and had to leave the business after 6 months because he could not bring himself to talk people into vehicles they could not afford. The Car Guy said it takes quite a while and some long hours to build relationships and make $.
